Ghost Hunting in the 21st Century By Connie LaFave Taboos in the United States are quickly becoming acceptable forms of entertainment and sources of scientific research. Christopher Columbus once declared that the world is round, and the world community laughed at this hypothesis until he proved them wrong by sailing around the world and discovering new land masses. Ghost Hunting in the 21st century is slowly changing from a once taboo and completely hypothetical field to a valid and scientific research field. Shows on television such as TAPS, Ghost Lab, and other television programs are changing the industry permanently by providing knowledge about the field, highlighting tools and evidence used to bring light to the subject, and giving background to the public as to make their own assessments of this once unknown field of scientific study. In the early 90’s, TAPS, also known as The Atlantic Paranormal Society, became one of the first teams to emerge in the television industry that brought light to the subject of ghost hunting. Bringing gadgets such as K 2 meters, the FLIR used by the military in thermal imaging, and electronic voice recordings (evp’s), or audio recordings, helped to show the scientific side of the field of study to the public. Although television shows are meant to entertain, it also provided a great introduction to the public about the field and cast a new light about ghost hunting. Shows such as Ghost Lab and Celebrity Ghost Stories, are continuing to give the public what they want to see and entertain them at the same time. The television shows in the industry are highlighting key tools used and how they work. This sheds light to the industry and allows a more scientific approach to the study of paranormal phenomenon.
