Future of Technology There are many works of science fiction that are about the topic of technology. When it comes to the topic of the future of technology, most scholars will readily agree that the future of technology is bright. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of whether technology will control us or not. Whereas some are convinced that technology will control us, others maintain that technology will not control most of what we do in the future. The point of science fiction is not merely just to entertain us; it is to warn us that technology and computers will regulate most of our future. John Roach is a contributing writer for msnbc.com who wrote an article titled “Robots pop popcorn, make sandwiches.” In Roach’s view, “While we’ve seen robots do other household chores ranging from making sausage breakfasts to folding laundry, this latest accomplishment is yet one more example of robots that think for themselves-that is, James and Rosie aren’t programmed to do each and every step in the food preparation process,”(1). Basically, Roach is saying that the robots James and Rosie have their own “brain” because they can prepare food without being programmed on how to do it. What Roach says matters because it shows that robots may do anything that we ask it to do, no questions asked. They will have an even bigger role in our future and regulate it. In “The Fun They Had” by Isaac Asimov, Asimov depicts the school system in 2157. The school system is independent of a teacher that is human and is based on technical advance. What Asimov shows us is how school could be in 166 years, when computers and other technology manage everything. Margie says “I hate school.” (18), which suggests that school in the future will be worse than today.
