They provide the same type of services as well. They give food weekly to the needy. At holiday time they give them Thanksgiving baskets with all the trimming and Christmas baskets. They also will provide toys for the kids and clothes. When they receive donations they will even pay utility bills in an emergency.
The idea that organic is better for the consumer and the environment is more of a mindset and not the truth. My purpose is to show the people who believe in organic products, that there are just as many down falls as conventional foods. Many people assume that organic foods are healthier, when in fact organic foods are more susceptible to carrying pathogenic bacteria, such as E. coli and salmonella. They also think that because organic farmers use natural pesticides rather than synthetic pesticides, it’s better for the environment. However, organic farmers are able to use a copper solution, which never leaves the soil, to fight fungal disease as where the conventional farmer use pesticides that are biodegradable.

Since the passage of the Organic Food Production Act in 1990, millions of Americans have supported a movement towards organically grown foods by socially responsible farmers. So much so, that in 2009 organic food sales had over 3.5% market share. Consumers had become more health-conscious and because of government public announcements focusing on the role that nutrition plays in health. Environmental groups supported this trend believing that organic farming was beneficial for the environment because of healthier soil and water practices. They began to shed light on hormone injected foods and the effects of pesticides on human health and consumers began to listen.
Ben and Jerry’s is a perfect example of a socially responsible company. To start, they use fair trade ingredients. When you buy Fairtrade certified products, know that the farmers who grew the ingredients received a fair price for their products. In return, Fairtrade farmers agree to use environmentally friendly farming practices, implement fair working standards, and invest in their communities. Fair trade is set in place to make sure the global economy is serving the people.

The garden can provide fresh, healthy, and locally grown fruits and vegetables. It is no secret that healthy foods tend to be expensive. Because of this it may difficult for low income families to afford fresh fruits and vegetables. Unhealthy and processed foods are cheaper and it is what some of the families in Church Hill are eating. By having a community garden these families will have access to healthier foods, and in turn can lead to healthier lifestyles and can save money on food.
