In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald illustrated an unattainable dream of Jay Gatsby. Gatsby wishes he can re-create the past again with Daisy, but Gatsby is so naïve to believe that it is possible. The book is filled with important symbols that serve as an important significance. The green light at the end of the Buchanan’s dock represents Gatsby’s dream of meeting Daisy again. The Valley of Ashes is a dark place, where only the poor live; they are separated from the rich.
Daisy, on East Egg does not desire money and has social standing. Gatsby only desires money in order to win Daisy but lacks social standing. While he lives on West Egg, he does so only in order to view his dream, Daisy, on East Egg. In fact, Gatsby’s father tells Nick that “Jimmy always liked it better down East” (9:176). Daisy, while she may love Gatsby, loves social standing more and so she remains on East Egg in a loveless relationship.
Gatsby did not grow up with money like Daisy; he acquired it. Therefore, he does not quite know how to handle his money or how to operate in his social class whereas the east egg represents old money people who are classy and sophisticated. The taste is luxurious but dull and calm this is where daisy lives but she is married By
The family signed an agreement to buy a house, but the house was poorly maintained so it was full of repairs which evidently would cost money that they didn’t have. The community the house was in wasn’t much better, being filled with crime and corruption and not very family oriented. As it seems a lot of their family finds jobs, tragedy strikes with the death of Jurgis’s
While Rex could be out working at a job that has a steady pay, he goes out and gets money in other ways such as gambling. When Rex makes money, he usually goes to a local bar and spends all his money on alcohol, leaving Jeanette, Lori, and Brian scavenging for food. The abuse of alcohol by Rex Walls in The Glass Castle affects the lives of the his children in many ways. From the beginning of the book Rex is under the influence of alcohol the majority of the time. Although his drinking is not too concerning in the beginning of the story, it increased drastically as his children got older.
This proves my thesis because we can see that he expects a lot of Daisy. Sadly enough, the author of this preposterous, and absurd essay could not find another quote to support this ideal. Although with some critical thinking he did find out more reasons that show that why what Gatsby expects of Daisy is too much. Though Gatsby is correct in his guess that Daisy still shares the old love that he feels, he is wrong to assume that she feels the same way about the reality of their history. She is unwilling or unable to undo her life in favor of a romantic vision of the future.
Gatsby cried to Daisy “Can’t repeat the past?... Why of course you can!”(116). This is an example of how Gatsby wants to be with Daisy so bad but this quote also puts in perspective how much Gatsby cares for her and if you compare this to what Tom thinks of him and Daisy’s relationship it doesn’t even compare. The way they both feel about Daisy is completely different. As you can tell Gatsby and Tom differ in many
That’s what I see in this seen as a meetup between Gatsby and Daisy is starting to take form, but how will it turn out for the two? I feel like Gatsby continues to urge activities on to Nick because he doesn’t want him to go because he simply wants a friend, someone to do things with and he is lonely by himself in this huge home, maybe daisy can fix that if she feels the same for Gatsby. Ch. 6: “Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can!
Pidgeon explains why Gatsby pretends to be having a great life. “Fitgerald makes it clear that Gatsby does not enjoy these things for himself. They are merely being used to realize his dream...the acquisition of Daisy” (181). As Nick gets to know Gatsby more closely we as the readers begin to think that, despite Gatsby’s enriching stories, things don’t add up. Gatsby did it all for Daisy.
He believes you should be together for love and happiness not for just being comfortable. He hates the how Tom and Daisy act when Myrtle and Gatsby die. They just stay together acting like it never happened and living their rich
