“Fifth Business” : The Role of Fifth Business “Fifth Business” portrays the life of a man named Dunstan Ramsay in the early nineteenth century who grew up in rural Ontario. As the novel begins to develop the theme of fifth business reveals itself and plays an integral role in the development of the novel as well as explaining to the reader the importance of the role of fifth business which can be applied to everyday life. The theme of “Fifth Business” describes an important trait of certain people who are essential to the plot yet are neither a hero nor villain and without them the plot would not function. Dunstan displays one who is “Fifth Business” and by examining his role throughout the novel the reader understands the significance of his character and how this is vital in both the novel and world today. The beginning stages of “Fifth Business” takes place in rural Ontario in a town called Deptford. Deptford is a typical small town where everyone knows each other and what everyone is all doing. Dunstan Ramsay (aka Dunny) grew up as an ordinary boy and as he grew up through his experiences in the war, teaching, pursuing of saints, world travels and interpersonal relationships he has a knack for playing an influential part in those he encounters. The theme of “Fifth Business” is what drives and sets the plot of the novel. Fifth Business is one who isn’t necessarily a main character or figure but rather is more of a secondary figure that plays a paramount role in those who are main figures in society. Dunny is Fifth Business and portrays the importance of the role of Fifth Business throughout the novel. In Deptford the entire community embrace religion and look up to Amasa Dempster who is the head of the towns church.
