How Antidepressants affect neurotransmitters. Depression is a medical illness that causes a constant feeling of sadness and lack of interest. Depression affects how the person feels, behaves, and thinks. It can lead to emotional and physical problems. Typically, people with depression find it hard to go about their day-to-day activities and may also feel that life is not worth living. People with depression may take antidepressants, which are psychiatric medication to alleviate symptoms. When taken, antidepressants affect the nervous system in your body, mainly your neurotransmitters. There are several forms of depression. Side effects are very rare when taking antidepressants, but they can occur. Those side effects include: A headache in the beginning, but after a while it will go away, nausea, which also goes away after a while. Insomnia, which goes away after a few weeks, for this you, may need to reduce the dosage. Men may experience erectile dysfunction and/or delayed ejaculation.
