Analyzing Psychological Disorders PSY/240 December 2, 2012 Stephanie Sencil-White Analyzing Psychological Disorders Part A The primary areas of brain affected in the psychological disorder of Schizophrenia are the limbic system, hindbrain and the forebrain. Starting with the forebrain; as we know it is the uppermost and largest section of the brain. The forebrain includes: the cerebral hemispheres, these are divided into four lobes, the limbic system, the thalamus, the hypothalamus and the corpus callosum. The forebrain helps control the cognition, which is as we know the process of thinking, understanding, learning and rationalizing. However it should be noted that she was of normal weight and height for her age. Beth began to diet, in doing so she lost weight yet, she was not pleased with her self-image. Beth is now described as “dangerously thin.” However Beth feels that there is nothing wrong with her and that she is too fat and needs to lose more weight, so she has restricted her food intake even more. It is noted that his excessive worry led him to see his doctor. Tom also has a problem with controlling Psychological Disorders his anxiety level. He has become aware that it is affecting his mood as he is often irritable, cannot concentrate and suffers from insomnia. All of these symptoms lead to the belief that Tom’s diagnosis is that of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Usually the most effective treatment would be the approach that combines psychological and psychopharmacologic approaches. Medication therapy is somewhat helpful in treating the panic attacks but should be used as a short-term solution only. “Clinicians should be especially watchful of the individual becoming psychologically or physiologically addicted to certain anti-anxiety medications, such as Xanax.” (www.psychcentral.com) Psychotherapy for GAD needs to be oriented toward Tom’s low-level, ever-present anxiety. Many times anxiety is often accompanied by inadequate planning skills, high stress levels, and difficulty in relaxing.
