There are 3 different ways for managing stress, these are SIT, Biofeedback and Support groups. SIT teaches individuals methods to change the way they think about themselves and stressful situations (change their irrational thoughts to rational ones). Biofeedback involves training the individual to take control over their own physiological reactions to stress e.g. heart rate, blood pressure etc. Support groups are groups of people that can be both formal or informal with similar situations to each other which people attend and share information and advice with each other to lower their stress levels. One difference between SIT and the other two techniques is that SIT deals with the underlining cause of stress whereas the other two techniques reduce the stress symptoms only. This means that SIT is more effective. For example biofeedback only offers a combination of relaxation techniques to manage the symptoms like tension headaches. In the study by Budzynski the aim was only to see whether biofeedback is an effective way of managing stress. In other words no attention was paid on what factors led to stress. However this is not a very strong point because it can be argued that this does not make SIT a more effective. This is because many psychologists agree that often it is harmful to find out information that may be in our unconscious mind, so as long as the person is able to manage their stress it is not vital to discover the underlying cause. One positive difference that support groups have in comparison to the other two techniques is that is a relatively cheap technique compared to SIT and biofeedback. Based on research I have conducted one session of biofeedback can cost around £23- £56 and SIT can cost from £10-£70, whereas social support groups, can be off no charge with family and friends (informal). Therefore more people have access to it, this is because
