Navajo and Pueblo Jewelry 1940 - 1970 Preface The Navajo Nation today is the largest Native American tribe in both population and geographical size (27,000 square miles; 300,048 people).The reservation is primarily in northern Arizona, stretching west to Grand Canyon National Park, north into Utah and east into New Mexico. The Pueblo people are a Native American people in the Southwestern United States. (Fig.2) Their traditional economy is based on agriculture and trade. When first encountered by the Spanish in the 16th century, they were living in villages that the Spanish called pueblos, meaning "towns". Of the 21 pueblos that exist today, Taos, Acoma, Zuni, and Hopi are the best-known.
Growth in commerce on the reservation promises to make the Navajo one of the wealthiest tribes in the country, but it does not seem that way. Like the other Athapascan-speaking people in the southwest, the Apaches, they arrived later than most tribes in the region. Archaeological evidence indicates that the Navajos migrated from the north about A.D. 1025 and the earliest Apache bands arrived about A.D. 825.The Navajo Indians are the largest federally recognized Native American Indian tribe in the United States. Pancho Villa – was one of the most prominent Mexican Revolutionary generals. As commander of the División del Norte (Division of the North), he was the veritable caudillo of the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua which, given its size, mineral wealth, and proximity to the United States of America, provided him with extensive resources. Villa was also provisional Governor of Chihuahua in 1913 and 1914. Although he was prevented from being accepted into the "panteón" of national heroes until some 20 years after his death, today his memory is honored by Mexicans. In addition, numerous streets and neighborhoods in Mexico are named in his honor.

Archeological studies have uncovered proof that Native Americans used virtually every part of the bison for almost all aspects of everyday life, from clothing to shelter and tools, even for jewelry.
There were many legends that were told to us about some of their land being taken over by the Spanish people. They were coming over to look for riches in order to support themselves and to claim lands. In the process they took destroyed their temples and even unburied their Mayan people in order to find gold and other riches to benefit themselves. After all of their searching and exploration their limited discovery was finding turquoise. This was not what they wanted to find but valuable to the Mayan people.
Olmec The term Olmec refers to the culture of a group of Mexican inhabitants who lived in the coastal plains of the modern cities of Tabasco and Veracruz, between 1200 and 400 BC this area was also referred to as the heartland due to the large population in this community and their monuments. These inhabitants form one of the most fascinating communities to ever exist. They were the first society in Mexico according to archeologists, and it is after this group that all other inhabitants of Mesoamerica followed. The community inhabited forests, savannas, and along rivers of the Gulf of Mexico. Unfortunately, quite little is known of the Olmec’s community but what remains clear is that the group followed a 365-day year, constructed pyramids

The Karankawa Indians that found the Spaniards were not a hostile group and brought food and aid to the desperate men. This would not be the situation when the Spanish attempted to travel west looking for food and help. They encountered other Indians that would attempt to place some of all of the men in captive as slaves of course, until they would escape repeatedly and regroup again looking for any sign of civilization.
