There is no doubt about it when it comes to the famous stories of Ernest Hemingway. For instance, the saga of the depressed character known as Nick Adams. The main character in various short stories. So much so, there are many famous stories about the titular character Hemingway wrote back in the day, Truth be told, the majority of his stories depicting Nick Adams, is the persona of Hemingway. In the mist of Hemingway’s broken life, he creates the famous stories of Nick Adams showcasing the gloomy aspects of life one story to the next, with each of Adams’ stories telling us the same exact theme. This story has numerous factors to actually see why the central theme of loneliness sticks out. Mainly, the title. Upon reading the story to the end, the title makes clear sense, given that “The End of Something” is alluding to an end of a person’s own problem. That problem in question was the relationship of the distinguished main character Nick and his ex, Marjorie. The pieces were all into place as in the story as Nick “ends” the relationship (which is the “something”) to Marjorie. Such lines uttered by him, include the classic line “It isn’t fun any more. Not any of it” (Hemmingway 108). To which the quote in particular is talking about how much their forced relationship affected them, and as a result of this, it isn’t fun. Thus, it creates the thought that being alone is the best way to have fun if a relationship becomes either too repetitive or too much of a hassle to handle. Possibility both even. This isn’t the only instance in the story where the line to the theme has been drawn. The imagery of Nick’s own body language of what happens next is also a said factor. For instance, after the breakup, Nick quoting from the story decided to “lay down with his face in the blanket by the fire. He could hear Marjorie rowing on the water” (Hemmingway 109). The events of the breakup came up in the discussion between Bill and Nick. Bill claimed did a right thing. However, Bill’s own words struck him hard as Nick feels guilty about what he has committed. Such as giving insight to what has happened in their relationship such as this: “He had talked to her about how they would go to Italy together and the fun they would have. Places they would be together. It was all gone now” (Hemmingway 122). They had future travels to go about as everything about their romance was almost like the ideal married couple. A topic like Bill explained in the story doesn’t want to be bought up by Nick. Mainly, letting go was his top priority. Shockingly, he stated in the story that everything was his fault after the initial conversation, as lonesomeness consumed him whole. This led to him being depressed in that conversation. This is where the theme of loneliness comes . Loneliness as mentioned before is a way to ease pain during an event like the break up at “The End of Something”. Talking to a friend like Bill in the story loosens that pain, as the story conveys a message about friendship. As showcased in the story after Bill and Nick talked about how Majorie and her mother spread false information about how Nick and her are being engaged, the story explains as
