Types of linguistic variation used to express and reflect social factors Sociolinguistics studies the relationship between language and society. It is concerned with the relationship between language and the context in which it is used. The aim of Sociolinguistics is to investigate and explain: - Why people speak differently in different social contexts - The social functions of language - The way language is used to convey social meaning. 1. Different language in different contexts The investigation of the way people use language in different contexts provides information about: - The way language works - The social relationships in a community.
