How drugs inspired the most popular music since 1967? There is no doubt drugs make music sound better when we’re on them but do they help artists produce better music? Or is it simply the large quantity of drug user’s can relate when artists are singing about drugs as they are familiar with the effects. Drugs have heavily influenced many, if not most of the iconic artists of the past half-century; The Beatles, Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, The Ramones, The Rolling Stones and Oasis were all known for drug use. Each with number one selling albums. Mainstream music has been shaped by the popular drugs of the time. Starting in 1967 with The Beatles earth-rupturing album “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” which sold 32 million copies. The pcsycadelic album and The Beatles alter ego’s all stemmed from expanding their minds with LSD. This is obvious with songs like Lucy in the sky with diamonds (L.S.D) and within without you is directly describing the feelings and thoughts of George Harrison while on acid: “ Try to realise it’s all within yourself no-one else can make you change, and to see you’re really only very small, and life flows on Within and without you” This is about the feeling that acid creates of realisation that as a human we are very small and insignificant going by the sheer size of the universe.
