We made tools to hunt, to farm and to build houses. After we satisfied our basic living conditions, we modified our tools to improve our daily life. We invented wheels for transportation, compass for navigation and paper for communication. These inventions made us a better life and allowed us to spread globally. Nowadays, with discoveries from scientists and mathematicians, engineers combine the knowledge of science and mathematical calculation to solve problems and translate ideas into reality. In addition, based on different application of engineering knowledge, engineering has been sub-divided into different categories. Each engineer is specialised in different professional fields. The diversity of engineering boosts up the development of human society. But everything has its pros and cons, developments will also lead to negative effects. Burning fossil fuels is our major source of energy generation, but at the same time, this will release greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide. Excessive emission of greenhouse gases strengthens the greenhouse effect, causing more heat will be trapped in the atmosphere. The rise of the global temperature also gives rise to other problems that come along with climate change. Apart from climate change, development consumes resources and energy, especially for overpopulated areas. However, resources are limited, uneven allocation of resources can also lead to development setbacks, cancelling out our efforts on development. This essay will discuss how engineers change their way to engineer the future with these two grand challenges: climate change and resource depletion. The
