H. is a 26 year old female that presents to the local health clinic with complaints of two red, scaly patches on her left hand. She states that the spots started about 2 weeks ago and that the first one appeared to be poison ivy. After the vesicles cleared R.H still complained of itching. Since initially seeing the two spots on her hand she has also noticed two new lesions, one above her left eyebrow and a small one above her right upper lip. She has used over-the-counter medications, believed to be steroid cream, antibacterial cream, and anti-itch cream, but they have not helped.

Rogers though that everyone holds a different concept of self, called the ‘ideal self’ this is how we would like to see ourselves, what we admire to be. For example some girls may see Cheryl Cole as an admirable figure and they would like to be her but when we sort through our differences, it can make us feel sad and angry. Rogers went on to create counseling called unconditional positive regard to help an individual seeking counseling to feel more positive about themselves. It’s counseling where the therapist should help the individual to feel better about them. Throughout this method of counseling, the service user begins to accept themselves for who they are and begin the gain a sense of worthiness.

The Vietnamese culture has an impact on how Vietnamese regard healthcare. It is important to understand the Vietnamese beliefs on religion, family values and healthcare to better understand how to be culturally competent when giving nursing care.
