who hides and what is hidden? how does deceit function in the world of the play, and how does it help the play comment on life in general? a central motif in the play is trickery or deceit, whether for good or evil purposes. counterfeiting, or concealing one's true feelings, is part of this motif. everyone seems to lie; good characters as well as evil ones engage in deceit as they attempt to conceal their feelings: beatrice and benedick mask their feelings for one another with bitter insults; don john spies on claudio and hero; don pedro and his 'crew' deceive benedick and beatrice.
I think that Antony is up to something. Antony tries to get the crowd to support him, by making Brutus look disloyal. I just knew that Antony couldn’t be trusted. Now we have killed him. I just hope that the other conspirators can see it my way.
Essay #2 As his quest begins it changes when Oedipus finds out that he really kills Laius for making him feel like a pheasant. But what he didn’t realize is that he was his own father until the messenger told him the truth. The main characters that Oedipus was in search for was himself. He was looking for someone that could save the town of Thebes from the plague but was not sure of who he was. They were trying to find the murderer of Laius, Oedipus not knowing it was him, when Jocasta was steering Oedipus in the wrong direction saying that it wasn’t him and it couldn’t have been him.

He also tells the murderers that Banquo is blameworthy for their tragic, unhappy lives. After angering the murderers, Macbeth switches to a more sarcastic tone and manipulates the murderers so they will feel like they need to prove themselves men, worthy of Macbeth’s presence. By asking questions, Macbeth leaves a gap between him and the murderers and waits for them to fill it. He asks “Are you so gospeled/ To pray for this good man and for his issue/ Whose heavy hand hath bowed you to the grave/ And beggared yours forever? (3.1.98-101).
Enraged, Oedipus killed all the men except one. Only later did Oedipus know that one of the men he killed was his father Laius. If Oedipus had not been so swift to action, then maybe the first part of his fate wouldn't have been fulfilled. The second flaw of Oedipus’, blindness to the truth, is made clear by Teriresias when he states “But I say to you, with both your eyes, are blind: - You cannot see the wretchedness of your life]” (Sophocles 1175). Oedipus does not want to believe that he is the one that murdered Laius, even though he knows that he encountered a similar incidence like the one when Laius was killed.
However his possession of power gives him not only a clouded judgment, but a characteristic of hubris as well. His hubris is his Achilles Heel in the sense that he is unaware that he is the one that has brought the hardship upon Thebes. While he is on the stage, he is talking to the chorus, announcing that whoever has murdered Laius should come up on the stage, and his only punishment is banishment. Ironically, he was the one that murdered Laius and fulfilled his own prophecy, and as he called the prophet that gave the prophecy as a witness, his hubris, fueled by his power, gives him this over-confidence to denounce the truth’s spoken by the prophet, “Had I known what madness I was to listen to,” Oedipus says, “I would have spared myself the trouble.” (38). This proves that Oedipus is fully unaware and unwilling to listen to what the prophet has to say about the truth.
He hires a few cutthroats and tells them "Both of you/ Know Banquo was your enemy" ( III. i. 129-130). He lies in order to trick the murders into thinking that Banquo is their enemy. Therefore, the murderers kill Banquo while the Macbeth does nothing.
Laertes’ father- Polonius is mistakenly killed by Hamlet. Therefore, at this point, Laertes has a similar situation as Hamlet. Laertes resolves to avenge his father’s death on Hamlet as Hamlet decides to avenge his father’s death on Claudius. However, the way they each avenge for their fathers’ death is opposite to one another. While Hamlet is self-conflicting with plans, Laertes is taking action immediately after he knows of his father’s murder.
The use of psychoanalytical perspective in order to analyze a literary work enables the reader to examine what motivates the characters. Why they are the way they are and why they do the things they do. In William Shakespeare’s Othello, Iago’s actions are fueled by his hatred of Othello and his resentment of Cassio. Iago is portrayed as the ultimate villain. Iago is furious at Othello for appointing Cassio to the position of personal lieutenant instead of Iago himself.
