Conservatism in America The Conservative Era lasted from 1968 to 1986. It consisted of some great events of our American History timeline. Many things happened during these times. Some good, some bad. There are four main things I’d like to go over regarding the rise of a “Conservative” America. Those topics are: Reagonomics, The Politics of the late 70’s and early 80’s, The Culture of the 80’s, and Foreign policy. First I’ll start off with Reagonomics. The word Reagonomics was the term used to describe the economic program of our 40th president Ronald Wilson Reagan. Reagan made a model budget plan in 1981 by putting together legislation that would cut government expenditures by $40 billion, and would create a three year tax cut plan for each American and corporate income tax. It was the largest tax cut in history and it was meant to jump start the economy, but after 1981, the exact opposite happened and America fell into to the worst recession since the Great Depression. The next thing I’d like to talk about is How religion affected Politics in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Ronald Wilson Reagan was an Evangelical Christian, and answered all America’s problems with a “Christian” oriented answer. He believed that Communism was absolutely evil, and wanted to put a stop to it completely. His speech at the Annual convention of the National Association of evangelicals he shared his values with conservative Christians by talking about hot topics like abortion, communism, and how they should be dealt with and answered in a Christian manner. To sum it all up, he was everything a Christian could hope for in a President, and I believe that helped push him through the election. Now lets get into the culture of the 80’s.
