OPPRESSION CONCEPTUALIZATION PAPER I believe that privilege is a special opportunity given to a particular person and not everybody. One are of my life that I have experienced a privilege is having the chance to come to Canada. I was born in Ghana and spent my most of my life there until I came to Canada. In a country like mine it is easy for people to die from hunger because there is barely help given to people with needs by the government. It is hard to live in a country like mine if one does not have a stable job to provide for himself. My parents are divorced so In Ghana I lived with my father and my two older sibling whiles my mom was residing in Canada. Most of the time I have to deal with the fact that racism still exists. A specific example of this was an incident that happened not too long ago in my apartment building. There was a day I forgot my keys to the main floor of my building where the elevators are, while I was waiting for someone to walk in to kindly open the door for me and old lady walked in from the inside of the building. I knocked on the glass door and motioned for her to kindly open the door for me but she just looked at me and pretended she didn’t see me. I thought she just didn’t hear me so I thought if I just knocked a little harder maybe she would but each time I knocked she looked at me with a blank face and turned around. After a few minutes I decided to just wait for someone to come in, not long after that and old class mate of mine who was white walked in to the front door. while she was struggling to find her keys in her bag to open the door, the old lady to the door as fast as she could and opened the door for her with a big smile on her face. I was a little confused because I had been standing behind the glass door for almost ten minutes and even though she could see bee she didn’t open the door. When the elevator came the old lady decided not to take it with us even though we were only two people in it. I whispered to my friend if she knew the lady but she said she had never met her before. I would not think or view situations like how I do now. My experience will always remind me to treat each and every human being equal regardless of class or race. No one or no specific race is above the law. Since I want to work with immigration and refugees, my experience of privilege will give me the opportunity to explain to my clients the opportunities they have and how they privileged they are to be in a country like
