When Amos received his freedom at the age of sixty, he knew not only how to survive in the colonies, but he had also been taught the importance of living a godly life. Amos Fortune appreciated and found encouragement in the scriptures. One of the Copeland children, whose name was Roxanna, read the Bible to Amos when he was a teenager.
Malcolm X’s childhood played a big role in his life. His father was lynched, the welfare and insurance companies destroyed his family, and his mother became mentally unstable. If that is not a nightmare, I don’t know what is. “Nightmare” is definitely an appropriate title for chapter one because of these tragic events that destroyed his family. Malcolm X’s father Earl Little was a social activist for the fight against racism and was apart of the great Marcus Garvey organization, the Universal Negro Improvement Association.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, racial tension ran tight. These men came from vastly different backgrounds, which gave them different “tools” with which to appeal and speak publicly to their audiences. The educated and skilled workers were represented. After he disappeared, his well-kept secrets began to come to light. My father was a rolling stone and combined, he had a total of 18 children, not including my dead sister. My mother had no clue, as to my father’s whereabouts so she was forced to work full-time to provide for us. Her mother moved in with us to take care of me and Eric, while she was at work. When Eric was 11, he was “allegedly” killed and hanged by two white men.

He was a young man that used his cocky and competitive attitude for the greater good to strive against others to get a better score on his school work. After being sent to a foster home, he was raised by white parents and attended white schools. However his dream to become a lawyer was ruined when a teacher heard his education plans and simply laughed. Feeling defeated, and probably angry Malcolm’s intentions to further his education were tarnished.
