I can acknowledge an opinion, especially if it is an informed one, however, I must say my reaction to this chapter is one of slight disgust at the lack of respect Zinn shows for a previous president. There are no mentions of Clinton’s healthy behavior or good deeds as president, and this is something that I think many chapters lack. As I continue to read, I find myself using more energy trying to preserve my own thoughts. I disagree with much of what Zinn says, yet I can find validity in some of it as well. I will say that even though the Clinton presidency was not the most effective presidency we have had, it is certainly not the most destructive, and at most, left the country in a passive
Shell shock was a term only associated with World War one due to the major impact it had throughout the war. It was specifically used in Britain to express a psychological breakdown for a soldier from stress and trauma and fear from battles and fighting. It was hard to cure them as people and doctors considered them to be cowards therefore refused to offer help. Some men only received help depending on their high class or rank in the community, while others were even put on trial and even executed for being ‘cowards’. Shell shock caused a lot of problems and casualties for the country and for the war.
The American people were so distraught behind the events that occurred in the nation’s capital. It left Americans in the dark about how their leaders obtain their positions and if their leaders were trustworthy, after Nixon proved he was not. Throughout the long months of controversy over Watergate, there was constant talk in and by the press of a “nation torn apart”. (Lang, 1980, p530) The period of time the Watergate scandal took place is similar to the crisis of confidence that occurred under the administration of President Jimmy Carter. Americans, at this point, wanted and need a national leader that would bring them out of the dark and into the
These three events had the biggest impact upon the USA. The assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. was a very surprising moment in 1968. The news of his death had an effect on almost everyone. After his death his message seemed to sink deeper into people’s thoughts and hearts after his death who agreed with them. For the most part blacks and whites would put their differences aside, but some blacks grew very angry and riots
Jason Campanile 4/8/11 Hist 400w Analytical Book Review Book Review of Resisting McCarthyism: To Sign or Not to Sign California’s Loyalty Oath McCarthyism in America included an era of suspicion, distrust and betrayal. During no other time period in the 20th century has so many of the basic democratic values of America been under threat. Many Americans found no hope in trying to stand up to the scrutiny they were put under during this time. With their jobs and careers on the line, most succumbed to the paranoia that forced them to give up their basic constitutional rights. Very few stood up to the McCarthy era’s witch hunts.
His words cause a huge conflict of thoughts of many earthlings , because it demolish a lot of ideas that were previously lived . If The reader -response critic 's job is it examine the scope and variety of reader reactions , I wonder what the reaction of the readers wanted Gene Brewer, describing the event in such a way that humankind has no explanation for their mistakes for centuries. Even the administration of examples in the form of Shakespeare, Mozart or Picasso is in response treated with contempt. This is the part so much important that criticized , among others, is the whole of our literature
The terrorist groups, especially the al Qaeda, were dissatisfied with how the United States government ran its affairs. In the case of Al Qaeda, the leaders and members felt that the United States should not protect Israel from the Arab world’s attacks. During the 1960s and 1970s, several groups of individuals as well as individuals voiced their disgust over the government’s handling of its affairs in terms of politics and the handling of international environments. For example, the discouraging loss during the Vietnam War was frequently mentioned as one of the waterloo events (losses) of the United States by the antigovernment rallyists. Within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States and Europe, several factions sought to terrorize those joining the war prerogative.
Beginning with mere lack of proper grooming standards; as sympathetic solders of the antiwar movement lacked proper haircuts, displayed peace medallions, penned “UUUU” on their helmets meaning “We are the Unwilling, led by the Unqualified, to do the Unnecessary for the Ungrateful.” Desertion rate was at an all-time high, for all services during the Vietnam era and more so around the world. This therefore hampered the armed forces
Nobody would have ever guessed the enormous effect it really had. It ushered in the era of cynicism. In the decade that followed Kennedy’s death, a period that would see government lies about the Vietnam War exposed and the revelations about the Watergate scandal during the Nixon administration was beginning to suspect. Instability was starting to reflect in American government and people were noticing with their negative light, demanding honesty and explanation, especially on the mess of the Vietnam War. But however much this was a terrible event and much mourned by the people, one plus I think it did bring round was advanced security measures.
When Eisenhower finally did something and sent the 1,000 paratroopers, a lot of the people in America were extremely annoyed, the west and north were angry that it didn't happen sooner and the south were angry that it happened at all, and disowned Eisenhower as a southerner. Eisenhower did not do this to help the blacks, but to enforce law. The causes and consequences of the Little Rock Crisis were on international television and were a huge eye opener for the rest of the world. Because of this, countries were putting pressure on America to stop this from happening. This is possibly the turning point for the black civil rights movement in
