Cold Blooded Soldier In some countries children have to join the army at a very young age, whether they like it or not. Ishamael Beah, the author of the book A Long Way Gone, had to join the army at the age of thirteen to fight against the rebels in the Civil War in Sierra Leone, which made Beah lose his innocence and struggle to understand himself. When the war happened, Beah lost his family, and he had to be on his own to escape the rebels. After a couple months, Beah joined the army and became a cold blooded soldier, who wasn’t afraid to kill anybody. However, later, with the help of teachers and a nurse, Beah started to trust people again. Moreover, Beah also got back his childhood when he met new friends at the UN Economic and Social Council, where he gave a speech about the effect of war on children. The war took away his family and transformed him from an innocent boy to a cold blooded soldier, but in the end Beah regained some of his childhood and regained his trusting people. Before the war came to Beah’s village, Beah only knew about war through books and movies. He had no idea of what war is. However, when the war happened in Sierra Leone, Beah lost his family, and he became a boy of war. After the rebels attacked his village Beah went on his own to find his family and his freedom. Beah had to walk for miles and find the directions to get from one village to the next looking for help. He stayed in the forest for more than a month hiding from the rebels. Moreover, finding food was very tough for Beah. He says, “We were so hungry that it hurt to drink water and we felt cramps in our guts” (32). The war took away his childhood and made children like Beah became a hunger because they didn’t have food to eat. One time Beah had to chase a little boy to steal two boiled ears of corn to eat.
