Audrey Smith Period 3 February 23, 2012 Mr. Parks Effects of The Great Depression In the movie, “The Cinderella Man,” it shows the troubles and hardships of an average American family during the time of the Great Depression. As the movie plays out, you see the physical as well as the mental state people went through. For this family, they had lost almost everything. It’s a wonder anyone could have survived such a way during this time period in America. The first to happen to this family was little income. They were barely making it through when he lost his job. Several men during this time period became a part of the category, “unemployment.” The unemployment rate increased a lot during the great depression. People who lost their jobs could not feed themselves, pay their rent, and support their family. This forced families together in crowded houses or apartments. People couldn't afford to separate or get divorced because they needed the income of everyone to pay the rent. Men who lost their jobs often felt ashamed of themselves. These men, women, and children suffered much and lost too much. The family in this movie shows that life is never easy and gets sometimes to hard to bear, but when they stick together; it made the burdens easier to bear. The Great Depression in the end had a toll on anyone who lived during it, but it gave people a sense of perspective of how they should live their lives and what matters the most. Because in the end, money, bills, and other worldly things are not as important as the meaning of being a family because in just a blink of eye, those things could be taken from you and everything that means something to you will be
