The family signed an agreement to buy a house, but the house was poorly maintained so it was full of repairs which evidently would cost money that they didn’t have. The community the house was in wasn’t much better, being filled with crime and corruption and not very family oriented. As it seems a lot of their family finds jobs, tragedy strikes with the death of Jurgis’s
He completely depends on money to meet his family’s needs and thinks that “life is money,” more than he trust in his mama and family. Walter is a fairly ineffective man in his house, who has be unable to gain his financial freedom. It becomes expected of Walter in his growth in the movie that his economic inconsistency endangers his ability to meet house hold duties. Throughout the movie, he supplies accurate illustrations to live up to the expected character of Walter Lee Younger. He shows his dependency on money instead of the family with definite evidence of anxiety to acquire his father's insurance check, that the family was waiting for from the start of the movie, in order to attain his goals.
Many lost their jobs, and were forced to look for work elsewhere. Numerous people were also forced to leave school to help pay the bills (Doc 1). Herbert Hoover, considered one of the worst presidents ever, did not help the situation very much. In 1930 he said that “The Depression is over.” However, the Depression did not end until 1937 when World War II began (Doc 2). The country was fed up with Hoover’s help.

His father and mother were quite different from one another, while they both influenced Carnegie from different point of views. His father was a weaver, before he was laid off, while his mother was the type of woman to do anything to make sure the family was financially stable. Andrew couldn’t help but admire both his figures, but he also had envy and a few bits of dislike towards them. He was always made the odd one out, as his parents always took a more liking to his older brother. Such other influences such as their family’s poverty and lack of opportunities has made him realize that he didn’t want to live such a life, as he got older.
Millions of people lost their jobs during these tragic times, and left their homes in pursuit of securing work, but most fell short. They on the other hand cannot fail to work because they have people looking up to them to provide and support.

One of the most important Act is the social Securty Act, drafted by Francis Perkins. It established a permanent system of Universal retirement pensions (Social Security), unemployment insurance, and welfare benefits for the handicapped and needy children in families without a father. It is the framework of the US Welfare system today. The Social Security Act created a way where it would help many people who are in need because of the loss of a man in the familiy (such as widows or no father). This is especially important since one mother can't support her family as well during the Great Depression which caused a lot of starvation.
Considering that there was not enough money in the bank and trying hard to feed a family was very difficult. Traditional roles within the family changed during the 1930s. Men found themselves out of work. Now had to rely on their wives and children to help work and, make ends meet. Many stopped looking for work, paralyzed by their bleak chances.
