Michael Willbon Ms. Veach 25 September 2011 Chlamydia Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacterium chlamydia trachomatis. Chlamydia is one of the most common STDs in the world and is the most frequently reported bacterial STD in the US. In 2009 there was a reported 1,244,180 chlamydial infections but due to under-reporting, an estimated 2.8 million are infected each year in the US. Symptoms are often not noticeable or minimal so it is hard to detect if you have Chlamydia but serious complications can occur if it is not treated, so make sure to get regular check-ups by your doctor. Chlamydia can be transmitted during the act of vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Any sexually active person can be at risk to get infected with Chlamydia. Teenage girls and young women typically are at a higher risk to be infected because their cervix is not fully matured and is more vulnerable to infection. For women, Chlamydia normally infects the cervix and the urethra and common symptoms are abnormal discharge from the vagina or a burning sensation when urinating. Chlamydia can spread from the cervix to the fallopian tubes causing symptoms such as low back pain, lower abdominal pain, nausea, pain during intercourse, or bleeding between menstrual periods, or could cause no symptoms. Symptoms for men infected with Chlamydia include discharge from the penis, burning sensation when urinating, or a burning and itching around the opening of the penis. Men and women can get chlamydial infections in their rectum which can cause rectal pain, discharge, or bleeding.
