Eleanor of Aquitaine Rough Draft Eleanor of Aquitaine was a very powerful woman in our history. She was dependable, honest, courageous, responsible, and so many more great things. In this essay I will explain to you why Eleanor was all of these things. I will tell you about events in her life that persuaded me to think she is a good example of a person with all the character traits above. Eleanor was an astonishingly responsible woman throughout her entire life. At age fifteen Eleanor’s father, William, decided to go on a religious pilgrimage to be relieved from his sins. Eleanor took part in the Second Crusade. She did this by offering Bernard of Clairaux thousands of vassals to use for the war, and by getting over three hundred women to help with the nursing of injured soldiers. While Henry and Eleanor were married she bore eight children; five sons and three daughters. The two created a powerful empire together. However, all was not well between them. In 1173, Eleanor led three of her sons in a rebellion against their father. The point of this was so Eleanor could rule Aquitaine with her son Richard and not Henry. The rebellion was put down and Eleanor was imprisoned by Henry in numerous buildings for fifteen years. Last but not least Eleanor was dependable. In 1189 Henry died. As a result Richard became King of England. While Richard was fighting at war Eleanor had no problem “lending a hand” to defend his land; even against her son John. When Richard was captured on his way home by the Holy Roman Empire, raised to pay for his ransom, and secure his release by using her considerable influence. And last, Eleanor completed her last Royal Duty at the age of seventy-seven. She undertook a 1,000 mile-tour, attended her affairs, settled disputes, made laws, granted charters, and brought order to people.
