Leshner states, “As with many other brain diseases, addiction has embedded behavioral and social-context aspects that are important parts of the disorder itself” (Leshner). Recognizing addiction as a mental illness can help reduce the health and social costs that are directly related to treating addiction. Research has exposed that drug abuse is a severe health issue, as well as a social issue. Addicts become so obsessed with consuming the substance it causes their immune systems to shut down and causes the addict to be incapable of functioning properly in a social setting. Addiction has severe negative consequences affecting the addict’s mental and physical well being.
The drug addicts lose all respect for themselves and these addictions end up taking over their lives. Maybe the addicts are right when they say the addictions are their own fault and aren’t a reflection towards their troubled childhood. Addicts may just get caught up in the wrong situation at the wrong time and end up getting addicted to a drug just to fit in with peers. Drug addictions will create emotional distress no matter whose fault it
Welfare Recipients have never been required to have drug tests to acquire benefits. Some think that drug testing would decrease the amount of people abusing the system. People who are drug users and refuse to stop or get help will not apply for welfare. Also, drug testing would send a message to society that abusing the system will no longer be tolerated and it would free up extra funds for families who actually need the help. Some also think that drug testing will make people stay clean in order to receive any assistance they would have to stay off drugs.
SOS 304 Drugs & Society Q3.1 The major causes for concern regarding cocaine use stems from the dependency that occurs as well as the damaging effect it can have on human health. Although cocaine was initially used for medicinal purposes, with its leaves being cultivated to produce paste, teas, and wines, those uses have long disappeared. Individuals who use cocaine on a regular basis are at risk for respiratory or cardiac issues, and mixing the drug with other drugs and alcohol can damage health and lead to fatalities. Drug users often have healthcare issues and require treatment for more than one ailment, even though they can be less than forthcoming when it comes to medical treatment and advice. Amphetamines are used to treat a variety of medical issues but like cocaine, illicit drug use in the 60s caused the federal government to become concerned about dependency and illegal activities.
Work related injuries can be costly on the company if the employee is found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident. Another reason companies should promote a drug free workplace is to reduce the number of early dismissals, absences, and tardies of employees. Offering drug tests is a simple way to discourage the use of drugs and/or alcohol by employees. Statistics show that employees that use drugs are more likely o have a workplace accident by 3.6 times and are more likely to create a workers’ compensation report by 5
As with soma, prescription drugs (where prescribed or otherwise) provide a quick fix for physical or mental problems and/or a way to get high. But these drugs also hurt the users, with addiction, bodily functions failing and making them be violent. The use of drugs has severe effects on the users and not only in reality but also in Brave New World. Usually people turn to drugs for relief and contentment, they want to be in a state of mind where they can feel things which they usually can’t and to be in a state of pleasure so they turn to them. Most do not realise the harsh long term effects these drugs can
Were being an addict and having a mental illness both full under a medical problem. The reason being is that an addict is going to need help to be able to kick their addiction. The biggest issue to look at is that surveys show that some people are ashamed to admit that they know someone in their family that has an addiction problem. And if you are ashamed or scared to admit the problem then maybe this paper will help with that shame. Because if you are ashamed to admit the problem then the person can not get the help they need.
A very commonly manipulated element is the medication itself. Due to of the amount of abuse and danger derived of that abuse, the government decided to limit and regulate the distribution and/ or prescription of narcotic and other misused drugs. While this sounds good in theory, it can and has become a controversial issue. Caught up in the midst of all this are physicians. While certain drugs are great for pain management, such as oxycontin and other narcotics, they are also great for a “high” and are commonly abused (“Prescription Medications”).
Speaking to the human factor, the loss of possibility and potentials to the addict are enormous. Since addicts come from any walk of life; parents, children, sisters, brothers; are all affected by this drug. First, we look at the addict. The losses of ability to function in society, gain educational goals, provide for themselves and others; is a huge cost to society. Medicaid, Social Services, CPS, law enforcement are all affected on a larger scale.
For those who don’t live a pleasant life and need to get away from their problems, although meth creates more problems in the long run, for the time being it creates a type of euphoric escape for the addict. Financially, it’s easy to sell, cheap to create, and quick money and it serves as a job for drug dealers. For people who have trouble paying bills or can’t get a job, selling drugs is a quick fix. Using this perspective we can see that people who are addicted to meth probably already need help, either emotionally or mentally. Maybe eliminating the deep seeded issues in these individuals before they turn to meth would prevent a large part of the problem.
