Career Investigation The career field that interests me is the ultrasound technologist. The ultrasound technician’s job outlook for the year of 2014 is bright. Since 2010 up until 2020 the number of sonography jobs are expected to increase by 44 percent around the world. According to the U.S. Department of Labor the total growth by 2020 for all jobs in the U.S. is expected to increase by 14 percent. Sonography has also out shined other related healthcare fields by 18 percent. Also, as the large population of baby boomers continues to age and requires more medical care, sonography seems to play a significant role in diagnosis and treating conditions. The first step in becoming an ultrasound technician is to obtain the necessary education. Which typically means earning either a two-year associate’s or a four- year bachelor’s degree in sonography from an accredited university. Students learn about anatomy and medical terminology, and how to operate sonography equipment and interpret sonographic images as part of the curriculum. Students also receive clinical training, and most programs allow students to specialize in particular areas, such as abdominal or breast solography. The second step is to receive certification or ones licensure. Certification is not strictly required in the field of diagnostic medical sonography. Some employers often prefer job applicants who have earned certifications through a country wide recognized professional agency. The third step after all of the education is done is to go find a job. Ultrasound technicians can find employment in hospitals, clinics, and public health facilities. The fourth step is to meet the continuing education requirements. This means that ARDMS’ certifications are only good for ten years. Therefore, ultrasound technicians have to complete 30 hours of continuing education over the final three years to renew their credentials. One is that ultrasound technicians receive some of the highest salaries in the medical industry. The second is job security. Which means even when the economy is down the need for ultrasound technicians increases year by year. Another benefit is not only does the ultrasound technician gets great health benefits, their family gets it as well. The fourth benefit is that even though one has went and finished ultrasound technician school, they learn new things on the job every day. The fifth is that ultrasound technicians should have pride. Through all of the schooling everything has paid off. Last is the emotional satisfaction. One should have a positive attitude while on the job.
