Neurosurgery Neurosurgery is the specialized field of surgery for the treatment of diseases or conditions of the Central Nervous System (CNS) and spine. Neurosurgeons operate on the brain, skull, spine, and spinal column. A neurosurgeon is a physician who specializes in neurosurgery. Being a neurosurgeon can be a very demanding, but rewarding job opportunity. There are many things you have to know before you become a neurosurgeon. Many early contributed to the field of neurosurgery, such as Sir William Mac Ewen and Harvey Cushing. Mac Ewen advanced the surgical field and also the neurological mapping of the brain which shows what part of the brain controls a certain bodily function. Harvey Cushing was an American who was responsible for developing the method that reduced the high mortality rate of brain surgeries to 10 percent and involved the use of x-rays to take pictures of the head. These outstanding men were just two of the many contributors to neurosurgery. The education requirements for being a neurosurgeon vary. The first step you must complete is getting a four year degree, a bachelor’s in science. A major that upcoming neurosurgeons would most likely major in pre-med associated with sciences like biology, physics, or chemistry. The next step is to complete four years of graduate school in a highly recognized medical school, and get your medical doctorate degree. Before getting accepted to medical school you must take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and apply to more than one medical school. After finishing medical school you will need to go through a neurosurgery residency program, but first people have to gain acceptance one. There are actually 99 accredited neurosurgery residency programs nationally.
