Can One Family Make a Difference? Climate change, its cause, its affect and how we can correct it seem to surround us daily. We are strongly encouraged by activists and scientists to “go green” and be environmentally friendly. It is evident that climate change is a problem with many believing one main contributor to this change being greenhouse gases. Many harmful greenhouse gases are emitted from the things we do every day, which means we should start looking into our daily lives to see what we can do to help reduce these harmful emissions. Because greenhouse gases can be reduced with an individual effort, more families need to explore how they cause these gases and what changes can be made to reduce them. Before we can effectively reduce our greenhouse gas emissions at home we first need to understand a little about them. Greenhouse gas is a gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation (par. 54). Greenhouse gases come in many forms with some being created naturally and some being created solely by human activities. If these gases were properly controlled the natural cycle of life would absorb and reuse these gases with no harm done to the environment. Unfortunately, due to human activities these gases have reached highs where our environment is unable to absorb the impact. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reported that there are four main greenhouse gases that enter the atmosphere due to human activities, with three out of the four being due to the production, transportation and consumption of fossil fuels (par. 2-6). Whether we realize it or not, fossil fuels are used in most everything we do daily, so let’s look around and see how we can make an impact to these harmful gases. Let’s start first by shifting our attention to the family automobile, which happens to be a large contributor to greenhouse gases. Just
