Biblical Worldview Essay

In this life there are many various worldviews. According to James W. Sire, a worldview is defined as: “A worldview is simply the total set of beliefs that a person has about the biggest questions in life”. A worldview tends to be formed around the following “inescapable” questions: “Is there a God? If so, what is He like? How can I know Him? Who am I? Where am I? How can I tell right from wrong? Is there life after death? What should I and what can I do about guilt? How can I deal with my inner pain?” The answers to these questions are usually formed by a person’s upbringing, religion, and environment. My worldview was formed mostly because of my family and my church. I grew up in a Christian home and knew from the start that I was always going to follow Christ. I went to public school, so I was taught evolution in Biology class. While I found it interesting, I did not find it to be remotely truthful. I viewed it as more of a science-fiction story and that my teacher would inform us that it was all not true at the end of the lesson, but it didn’t and she didn’t. Going to church as a family was not a choice, growing up, but a weekly mandate. I enjoyed going to church, I enjoyed the songs that we say, and the verses that were read, but it wasn’t really my choice to go. It wasn’t until I left for the Marines that I had to make the conscious effort to attend church. I remember waking up and in my sleepy daze almost see the angel and the devil on my shoulders arguing about whether I needed sleep or church more. For the longest time, sleep won out. I found my faith slipping and my want to learn more about Christ dwindling. It wasn’t until I met my fiancé that I started to go back to church.
