Beowulf, the True Hero To label one as a hero, he or she must acquire heroic qualities such as courage, certainty, determination, tolerance, sympathy, management and most important, strength. A well-respected, grateful leader is a person that everyone tries hard to be. It is a type of person that everyone can look up to, try to follow, and look to in times of agony. Although everyone is different in their own ways, there are characteristics common to most great leaders that can be seen. The story Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf reveals all of those traits and makes use of them to defeat his enemies, Grendel, Grendel’s mother and lastly a Dragon. Along with the various characteristics Beowulf has, Hrothgar also has a few great qualities are very apparent, these being kindness, devotion, and daring. Both the leaders represent these qualities multiple times throughout the story. Kindness to ones' people and ones' friends is a characteristic everyone wants in a leader. In the story, Beowulf defeats Grendel, an enemy of Hrothgar and his people. For this mighty deed performed, Hrothgar not only holds a party for several days in Beowulf's honor, he also rewards him greatly with many riches. In a way of showing appreciation and benevolence Hrothgar, the king of Danes “presented Beowulf with a gold standard as a victory gift, an embroidered banner; also breast-mail and a helmet; and a sword carried high , that was both precious object and token of honour.”(Lines 1019-1023.) Hrothgar, had accomplished in being a mentor and father figure to the young warrior, and succeeded on delivering advice about how to act as a judicious ruler. And truly Beowulf has shown that to us throughout the story. Beowulf embodies heroic qualities and one in particular is devotion and loyalty.
