Okinawa was one of the last major battles of World War II. It took place over a course of 82 days’, ranging from April through June 1945. This battle was fought on the grounds of the Ryukyu, Islands of Okinawa. More people died in this battle than both Hiroshima and Nagasaki put together. 12,000 were left dead, 38,000 Americans were wounded and 10,000 civilians perished during Okinawa. The battle at Okinawa was named the bloodiest battle of the Pacific War. The United States entered World War II in December 1941, when Japan attacked the American naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After that Hitler declared war on the United States, along with Germany. The United States and British troops landed on the beaches of Algeria and Morocco in North Africa on November 8, 1942. In June, 1944 British and the United States troops successfully land on the Normandy beaches of France, opening a second front against the Germans. In March, U.S troops crossed the Rhine River and in early April entered into the battle at Okinawa. This was the first time that Americans had fought on Japanese soil. The Americans had estimated that there were about 65,000 Japanese troops on the island; the Americans plan was to destroy what was left of the Japanese merchant fleet and use airstrips in the region to launch bombing raids on Japan’s industrial heartland. Being named the bloodiest battle in the Pacific War meant more than just a few casualties. The invasion began on April 1, when 60,000 American troops landed on the front lines. The battle proceeded in four phases: First, the advance of the eastern coast; Second, the clearing of the northern part of the island; Third, the occupation of the outlying islands and Fourth, the main battle which started on April 6, and did not end until June 21.
