To say that the ‘peopling of Australia has been dominated by a racist discourse is a somewhat fair statement. This essay will examine the history of this ‘peopling’ and demonstrate that while it was true that for a long period of Australia’s relatively short history, there was a racist element to its immigration policies, the recent ‘peopling’ has seen a fundamental more towards establishing this nation as a multicultural society. By examining the issues of the treatment of the Aboriginals, the history of Australia’s immigration policies, with particular attention to the “White Australia Policy,” and Australia’s more recent, and current immigration policies and social opinions, this essay will seek to show that although racism was predominate…show more content…
The economic boom and social contentment allowed people to feel safe and secure as they made their money. This wealth also enabled welfare systems to be created which ensured the new migrants could help to become integrated into their new home.[22] Another factor which influenced these gradual moves towards a more diverse and multicultural society was Australia’s developed economic and social ties and relationship with the Asia Pacific region. This action was a shift away from Australia’s traditional Europeaness and into the focus of its geographically closer trade and export partners.[23]These examples demonstrate the path Australia was making towards racial tolerance and multiculturalism. While there was some social unrest in the 1980s as Australia moved further into a relationship with Asia, these fears of the “Yellow Peril” have been largely unfounded as population from Asian nations has continued from its northern neighbours. In terms of our more recent and current ‘peopling’ the statistics indicate that race doesn’t play any part in the selection or intake of migrants. A look at immigration from July 1997 to March 1998 shows over 50% of people settling in Australia have come from traditionally non-white backgrounds.[24] Today Australia truly is multicultural nation with over 140 countries making up its…show more content…
