Barbara Heard MSN 285637 Mentor: Ronda Arnold February 9, 2013 Spirituality and Nursing Care: Would more education for nurses be beneficial? Research shows that nurses are in need of in depth education surrounding the difference between religion and spirituality in order to better address spiritual concerns of patients, as religion plays a role in a patient’s perception of health and illness. (Andrews, M. and Hanson, P., 1989)( Andrews, M. and Hanson, P., Religious Beliefs: Implications for Nursing Practice. Transcultural Concepts in Nursing Care; 1989; Chapter 13: 357-367; by Joyce S. Boyle and Margaret M. Andrews) Although spiritual care is a known standard of care, many nurses are not well prepared in this area and as a result, some nurses are unable to direct or address the spiritual concerns of patients effectively. By making spiritual care in nursing a part of the core curriculum for all nurses, theory and practices can be established, better preparing all nurses to use their assessment and intervention skills effectively in this regard.

Because of the advancements of religion/spirituality, new ethical dilemmas have surfaced in the psychological arena, some of which are covered under the Code of Ethics. Bringing together education and healing was a life-changing experience that made me realize that nursing is my true calling. Traditionally, nurses were viewed as caregivers. In today’s world, image of nursing profession changes as nurses play many other roles such as patient’s advocates, educators, managers, team members, facilitators, and experts. (Zerwekh, 2006). As I read the entries from my reflective journal, I could see how my focus shifted from assisting patient with his basic needs at the beginning of the nursing school to more comprehensive nursing care today.
