Coach K at last led Duke to victory in 1991, winning their first national championship. Once again in the year 1992, Duke won the national title, and maintained the national number one ranking throughout the season, this time by 20 points. Mike Krzyzewski is the only coach since John Wooden to win two consecutive NCAA championships. Once again the Duke team made it to the championship in 1994, losing by only 4 points to Arkansas. Shortly after the tournament, Coach K. was forced to take a ten-month break from coaching because he underwent back surgery, but he returned to lead the Blue Devils into three more NCAA tournaments in 1996, '97 and '99.
The St. Louis Cardinals are in the heart of the Wildcard race in the National League and they didn’t help themselves taking the loss on Saturday. Jon Jay, Matt Holliday, and Rafael Furcal all had two hits each as the Cardinals scored two runs on 11 hits. On the mound Jaime Garcia allowed seven hits and four earned runs while striking out five over six innings of work to fall to 3-5 on the year. For Sunday’s game St. Louis starts Adam Wainwright who has won his last four starts. For the season Wainwright has allowed 152 hits and 65 earned runs while striking out 154 over 160.1 innings for a 3.65
There would be no rally for the second round, being swept by the Blackhawks. The impressive success continued to grow in 1993, hitting the 100 point mark for the first time in 41 years. The regular season accomplishments would not carry into the playoffs, and once again the Wings were defeated in seven games against the Maple Leafs. Following the season, the franchise would fire head coach Bryan Murray and bring in legendary Scotty Bowman. Bowman knew about playoff success, winning Stanley Cups with the Montréal Canadiens in 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979, and with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992.
On July 11, 1914, two weeks after Archduke Ferdinand was shot in Serbia, the left-handed Ruth pitched his first game against the Cleveland Indians. That year the Babe had a 2-1 record as a pitcher and had a .200 batting average. That same year, Babe Ruth married his first wife, Helen Woodford, a young waitress, on October 14 at the St. Paul Catholic Church in Maryland. The Babe continued to play great baseball, compiling a 89-46 record and a 2.19 ERA in six years as a pitcher in Boston and .308 batting average in the same span. As his time at Boston progressed, the manager there decided due to Ruth’s amazing hitting ability to de-emphasize him as a pitcher and make him an outfielder.
Since 2002, only two teams that were ranked outside of the preseason top 10 in the coach’s poll have played for a BCS championship. One of those teams, the 2010 Auburn Tigers, was guaranteed a berth by winning the SEC championship game. (2) The inconsistencies in the BCS system are rampant. For instance there is a special sub set of rules that apply only to Notre Dame, a school classified as independent due to their lack of conference affiliation. In this rule sub set Notre Dame automatically qualifies for a BCS berth if they finish higher than ninth in the final BCS poll.
With his combination of power hitting and defensive ability, Schmidt may have been the greatest third baseman in baseball history. He won a record eight NL home run titles, three most valuable player awards, and ten Gold Gloves, second only to Brooks Robinson. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Schmidt joined the Philadelphia Phillies late in the 1972 season and played all four infield positions in 1973, when he was terrible offensively. He struck out 136 times in just 367 at-bats and hit only .196. Playing winter ball in Puerto Rico after that season, Schmidt "found a swing that made things happen," as he put it.
The 2000 World Series, the 96th edition of Major League Baseball's championship series, featured a crosstown matchup between the two-time defending champion New York Yankees and the New York Mets, with the Yankees winning four games to one for their third straight championship and 26th overall. It marks, to date, the last World Series with a repeat champion. It was the first postseason Subway Series since 1956. For the Mets, it was their fourth World Series appearance—the most of any expansion franchise in the MLB and their first since their championship season of 1986. Under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement between MLB and the new World Umpires Association signed in 2000, the traditional National League and American League umpire was
Introduction In 776 B.C., the first recorded sports event was held in the Ancient Olympic Games in Greece. The only event, the stadion, was won by Coroebus of Elis. The prize Coroebus received was a palm branch and the honor of being known as the fastest man in Greece. Sports have evolved from a simple contest of pride into a trillion dollar industry worldwide. Last year, Alex Rodriguez signed a 10 year contract that will pay him over $300 million to play baseball for the New York Yankees.
HAS Admiral Mike Mullen, who retires next month after two terms as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, become a tad “demob happy”—or is America engaged in a serious, some would say overdue, attempt to redefine its relationship with Pakistan? Nobody has put more effort than Admiral Mullen (pictured above left) into nurturing the fractious but vital military-to-military relationship between the two countries. When I saw him in Washington, DC late last year, America's most senior military officer told me that he had travelled to Pakistan more than 20 times since 2008 for meetings with General Assfaq Kayani (pictured above right), Pakistan's top soldier. Despite the many frustrations he had encountered on the way, Admiral Mullen remained determined to see General Kayani not
British number one yet to reign supreme in Grand Slam Although an improvement on the hammering he received from Djokovic in last year’s Australian Open, Murray still let it slip through his fingers again this year meaning that he is still yet to reign victorious in a Grand Slam. The 24 year old scot has reached the final or semi-final in the last five major tournaments showing that he is still a force to contend with and well deserves his place as fourth seed. If Murray seals the deal, he will be the first British man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Fred Perry 1936. Friday’s semi-final was an intense battle, nearing on five hours before the Serb, also 24, ended Murray’s valiant effort 6-3 3-6 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 7-5, a display of how
