Alternative medicine is forms of treatment that have not been scientifically proven and are not approved by the medical profession for example acupuncture, but used instead of orthodox medicine. Complementary medicine is alternative medicine but works with orthodox medicine as it recognises a relationship between orthodox and non-orthodox and so they support each other for example homeopathy. Hunt and lightly are sociologists who have looked at alternative medicine, and believe there has been an increase in the number of people turning to alternative medicine.
