Brown v. Board of Education Imagine having to walk four miles to school everyday through the slums of an urban city just to take the bus to a school, a school that is substandard at best, when there is one four blocks away that you are unable to attend because of the color of your skin. This was a reality for Linda Brown and many other African Americans throughout the nation prior to the 1950’s. With the help of the NAACP, the blacks in Topeka, Kansas helped to give equal access to education for all races throughout the country (Reeder). The Brown v. Board of Education (II) or simply Brown II is an extension of the Brown v. Board of Education case completely devoted to answering the question, “What means should be used to implement the principles announced in Brown I?” Chief Justice Warren understood the necessity of varied strategies to remove segregation in public schools because of local situations, but he did not give them strategies. Instead, he ordered all schools to integrate, “with all deliberate speed,” which would cause controversy later on because of its vagueness [BROWN v. BOARD OF EDUCATION (II)].
