Essay 1: Are social media a savior or a threat? Rita Oliveira 12062456 The world is changing and it is happening faster than we could imagine. Only ten years ago Facebook was a recent website only for college students, Twitter and Instagram didn’t exist and no one ever heard of smartphones and Wi-Fi. Nowadays people joke that Wi-Fi is at the bottom of the pyramid of needs. Not very surprisingly an image of this was posted on Facebook. For most people born in to the Millenials generation it does feel like this. This generation wakes up with their smartphone, goes to sleep with it and checks it several times a day. They share everything online but recent incidents like the NSA crisis has society questioning more and more if social media is a good development. Therefore, this essay will focus on the question if social media are a savior or a threat. Due to globalization transportation methods have improved a lot and became cheaper. The modern generation is used to travelling and meeting people from all over the world. Social media is a cheap and easy way to keep in touch with these people. All one needs is a smartphone and Wi-Fi to share all its good moments, pictures and thoughts. Applications like Skype allows people to have conversations with their loved ones with image and sound from every part of the world at any moment. Social media has even reunited old friends and family members who lost track of each other. Furthermore, social media offers people the chance to meet other people with the same interests through online communities. It was never so simple to find new friends or even a romantic partner. People no longer need to rely on their local environment but have the freedom to communicate with any individual all over the world, without any barriers (Rushkoff, 2010).
