Donald Bear, Marcia Invernizzi, Shane Templeton, and Francine Johnston (2008) explain that there are two purposes for word studies. First is to help students develop a general knowledge of English spellings. Second, word study increases their specific knowledge of the spelling and meanings of words. Word studies are developmental because teachers must differentiate instruction for different levels of word knowledge (Bear et. Al, 2008).
Do you think these two concepts always need to match up or align with each other in language? 3. How do Eckert & McConnell-Ginet define the syntactic level of language? (i.e. How do they define syntax?)
PASSAGE ANALYSIS TIPS (Some ideas based on comments by Alan Buster, AP English Consultant) Passage analysis questions on the AP exam often suggest which stylistic terms the writer should address. Even when the questions mention no stylistic terms, it is wise to include references to diction, syntax, figures of speech, and tone. Students should pay particular attention to the main verbs in the question: verbs like “characterize” and “analyze” call for the writer to emphasize style with appropriate terms. When analyzing diction, consider such questions as: Is the language concrete or abstract, verbs active or passive? Are the words monosyllabic or polysyllabic?

All complete sentences must have a main verb, though there may also be other verbs and verb constructions. In English, there are several types of verbs, including action, linking, and helping verbs. We choose the type of verb we want based on the meaning we want to convey. In addition, we add helping verbs or verb endings to words based on when the action or state of being we want to describe takes place in time. Action verbs describe what the subject is doing—running, singing, thinking, etc.

1. Who is responsible for what is known as “language acquisition device"? What are the basic principles behind this thought on language development? Noam Chomsky believes that children are born with an inherited ability to learn any human language. He claims that certain linguistic structures which children use so accurately must be already imprinted on the child’s mind. Chomsky believes that every child has a ‘language acquisition device’ or LAD which encodes the major principles of a language and its grammatical structures into the child’s brain.
