A case study is examined to illustrate possible approaches to care and personal reflections of the author will be shared regarding issues of teenage pregnancy. In 2009 almost 410,000 infants were born to United States teenage girls between the ages of 15 and 19. Nearly two-thirds of births to women younger than 18 and more than half of those among 18 and 19-year-olds were a result of unintended pregnancies (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). This represents a teen birth rate as much as nine times greater than other developed countries and is especially high among black and Hispanic teens in southern states (Vital signs: teen pregnancy, 2011). Those at highest risk of teen pregnancy are girls from single parent homes, families with low socioeconomic status, and girls with a sister who became pregnant as a teenager (Talashek, Alba, & Patel, 2006).

“Older pregnant women are 37% more likely to report drinking during pregnancy than younger women” (Ager et al., p. 1813, 2010). Ager and colleagues conducted a study examining the impact of maternal age on the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on attention, memory, and cognitive ability. A longitudinal study was conducted on pregnant inner city African American women living in Detroit, MI. The women were interviewed at each prenatal visit to determine the amount of alcohol they had consumed during that period and how frequently. The children were not tested until age 7 as they would now be school aged and required to use cognitive functions.
In the report titled, The Forgotten Americans Homelessness; Programs and the People They Serve, it states that serious problems since childhood are common causes among homeless people with 25% reporting childhood physical or sexual abuse, 22% reported they were physically assaulted and 7% sexually assaulted. It also states that 38% reported an alcohol problem and 26% reported a drug problem. “According to date from the Administration on Children and Families, in 1998 there were an estimated 2,806,000 referrals of child abuse or neglect to relevant state or local agencies,” Additionally, approximately, 1,100 children died of abuse or neglect, a rate of 1.6 deaths per 100,000 children. Of all forms of abuse, about three quarters of the perpetrators were parents,” (Almanac of Policy Issues:Child Abuse). Domestic Violence also plays a major role in abuse.
4) According to the U.S. Surgeon General, about 5,000 kids under 21 die every year as a result of underage drinking – from crashes, homicides, and suicides. Teens that drink also are at risk for a long list of other injuries and potential life-long alcohol abuse. c) Car crashes are the leading cause of death among people ages 15 to 20. About 1,900 people under 21 die every year from car crashes involving underage drinking.
Statistical significance The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has compiled startling evidence which unearths the gravity of the situation. During the year 2002, approximately 12.5 million licensed drivers fell between the ages of 16 and 20. This comes to 6.4% of the total driving population and looks to be an insignificant figure. However, the following facts depict another story: 1. During the year 2004, 4,767 fatal teenage accidents were reported by the CDC.
