When they received the gold, they quickly prepared an expedition to the wealthy kingdom, city in Mexico. New Spain was a viceroyalty, an administrative unit of the Spanish colonial empire. New Spain colonized all over the world. They governed Spanish conquests in North and Central America, the Caribbean, South America’s west side, and a few territories in the Asia-Pacific region. They conquered so much land, that they were one of the largest empires in the world.
With using the criteria`s of: scale, genius, effort, and significance; we will see what they were. The Maya`s remarkable achievements were: trade networks, calendars, and the number system; However their most remarkable achievement was building cities. Three good examples of the remarkable achievement by the ancient Maya were trade networks, number system, and the calendar. The trade network reached across Mesoamerica from southern Mexico to Honduras (Doc A). The Mayan`s carried many products on these routes including cocoa, basalt
Teotihuacan’s Continuing Influence on the Aztec Teotihuacan was one of the most remarkable Mesoamerican cultures that arose by AD 150. Although the fall of Teotihuacan came around AD 650, its unprecedented civilization which was one of prestige and great significance did not go unnoticed by later cultures. The influence of this prodigious city stretched from Northern Mexico to Central America, inspiring countless Mesoamerican civilizations and cultures for centuries. Perhaps what was the most impressive aspect of this ancient city was the grid format that was determined by two axes that were linked to the position of the sun and the stars. The grid informed all positioning of the numerous pyramids, temples, plazas, and ritual walkways that surrounded the central core of the city.
In his exaggeration at the success of the trip, he even claims that “The seaports there are incredibly fine, as also the magnificent rivers, most of which bear gold.” Columbus says he had taken control of the islands for the highness King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, who had financed the trips to the New World. The procedure he used to take possession is by holding up the Royal Standard. He gave gifts wherever he went, and made sure his men were not giving out objects of minimal value. His extreme generosity meant that he quickly gained the trust of the people he encountered, to the point he began referred to as the man from heaven. This is ironic because it is originally Columbus who thought he had found Eden from the Bible when he came across the islands.
My dear nephew Marco, I am so pleased that your father has agreed to send you on your first trading assignment to represent us. I am certain you will do well for the Contarini and bring us a healthy return on the family investments in this voyage. The ship on which you sail is one of the finest of the Venetian fleet and should provide you safe passage. What Canale has said of us so many years ago is even more accurate today: "Merchandise passes through this noble city as water flows through fountains." May the waters on which you sail be as beneficial to you as they have been to this republic, and may our patron gods of Venice - Mercury, who watches over commerce, and Neptune, who guards the seas - guide you on your voyage.
The transatlantic during the colonial period was a time of great change for the Spaniards who were out to conquer everything and the Latin Americans that were being conquered. Each and every person in the society had an ever changing role. The abundance of land, money and opportunities in the new world led to the influx of people ready take chance to make a name for themselves or change their lives all for the glory of Spain. No matter your circumstances in the Old World whether that be economic, social,or cultural you were able to find change in the New World to a certain extent. It was said “in the chaotic world of Peru every Spaniard who came afterward, even the humblest baker or foot soldier, could expect to improve his or her condition in ways impossible to those who stayed at home” (Stepto Intro)This is especially true for Catalina de Erauso who broke defined gender roles normally assigned to women in 17th century Spain and Latin America. Catalina de Erauso was born in Basque country in the country of Spain and like her sisters and many girls in 17th century Spain she was sent to live in a convent at the age of 4. The women of these times often lacked agency and all their decisions were based on the men in their lives. In Spain women who are sent into the convents have no other remedy than to stay in the convent and wait until an arranged or marriage of convinience comes along or become a nun which happened to 3 of Catalina’s 4 sisters;only one of them got married. The women of the New world also lacked agency and de Erauso comments that “ The women of Tucuman have no more sense than to plot marriage to the first young Spaniard to present himself”(Erauso) Once again the importance of the woman is placed on the male and it doesn’t matter what status he holds as long as he is a Spaniard. While the New World is still a pretty male dominated world there are a few
This prophesy stated that Quetzalcoatlin had left Mexico in the tenth century but would return from the east to reclaim his authority over the Aztecs. The Aztec Emperor, Moctezuma, saw Cortés' arrival as the fulfilment of this prophecy and welcomed the party warmly, presenting the Spaniards with lavish gifts.”
To Cadmus all praise I offer, because he keeps this spot hallowed, his daughter's precinct, which my own hands have shaded round about with the vine's clustering foliage. Lydia's glebes, where gold abounds, and Phrygia have I left behind; o'er Persia's sun-baked plains, by Bactria's walled towns and Media's wintry clime have I advanced through Arabia, land of promise; and Asia's length and breadth, outstretched along the brackish sea, with many a fair walled town, peopled with mingled race of Hellenes and barbarians; and this is the first city in Hellas I have reached. There too have I ordained dances and established my rites, that I might manifest my godhead to men; but Thebes is the first city in the land of Hellas that I have made ring with shouts of joy, girt in a fawn-skin, with a thyrsus, my ivy-bound spear, in my hand; since my mother's sisters, who least of all should have done it, denied that Dionysus was the son of Zeus, saying that Semele, when she became a mother by some mortal lover, tried to foist her sin on Zeus-a clever ruse of Cadmus, which, they boldly asserted, caused Zeus to slay her for the falsehood about the marriage. Wherefore these are they whom I have driven frenzied from their homes, and they are dwelling on the hills with mind distraught; and I have forced them to assume the dress worn in my orgies, and all the women-folk of Cadmus' stock have I driven raving
When he sailed the ocean in 1492, Christopher Columbus stumbled upon an amazing discovery, The Americas. Scattered throughout this discovery were groups of respectful and kind people, the Native Americans. In a note to the King and Queen of Spain Columbus wrote, “so tractable, so peaceful are these people…that I swear your majesties there is not in the world a better nation. They love their neighbors as themselves, and their discourse is ever sweet and gentle, and accompanied with a smile” (Brown 1). A plethora of examples from history can support, and perhaps verify the claims made by Columbus.
In his letter to the King and Queen, Christopher Columbus wanted to announce his discoveries. “I found very many islands peopled with inhabitants beyond number. And, of them all, I have taken possession for their Highnesses.” He also mentioned how breathtaking the new world was.“There are palm trees of six or eight species, wondrous to see for their beautiful variety” “Spanola is a marvel; the mountains and hills, and plains, and fields, and land, so beautiful and rich for planting and sowing.” “And they knew no sect, nor idolatry; save that they all believe that power and goodness are in the sky, and they believed very firmly that I, with these ships and crew, came from the sky and in such opinion, they received me at every place were
