Writing Topic: Compare and contrast the way that relationship is perceived in Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery,” J. D. McClatchy’s “Jihad,” and Salman Rushdie’s “Imagine There’s No Heaven.” It can be said that religion is a part of every person’s life. If one does not profess a certain religion, then one no doubt has a tendency for a religion. If one does not have a tendency for a religion, then one is probably against certain religions, or perhaps all religions. In all these ways, religion touches the lives of people, be it for the positive or negative. Relationships between people and religion develop quickly and powerfully, and we can view these relationships under the microscope of literature.
The Moral Dilemma of Religion and Politics Tanya Forbes SOC 315 August 15, 2011 The Moral Dilemma of Religion and Politics Within every culture and civilization there is a distinct and purposeful effort to define, divide, and identify one group of people from another. The methods are as old as time; as throughout history the means used to define a civilization’s identity were wrought through religion, language, culture, and governance. Understanding the events that took place which enabled America to become what it is, and discerning the religious underpinnings of our nation, we may ask if religion and politics is really a problem? What does separation of church and state really mean, and to what extent does it apply? Regardless of the argument for or against religion’s role in politics, it is clear they cannot be truly separated.
A belief system is any set of ideas that a person holds to be true. There are many types of belief systems such as science, religion and political ideologies, like feminism. These belief systems often give meaning to a person’s life and guide their behaviour. These belief systems are constantly conflicting and competing against each other to become the more dominant belief system within society. In recent times, religion has been the most dominant belief system but science has challenged religion which has led to secularisation.
Christianity is a very religious group that follows their bible. The Judasim religion has a lot of different beliefs and religious celebrations. And in the Islamic religion the Qur'an is the highest authority. Out of the few similarities in these three religions, some of their biggest ones have to do with having their place of worship and similar symbols. Each one of these religions have their own religious celebrations.
In the next decade there will be many important events that will be part of the Cold War that will have significant impact on communism and democracy, the Vietnam War where 58,000 Americans died in an effort to contain communism. Other important events were the Gulf War and the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan and the collapse of the Soviet Union. This would end the Cold War era. This was seen by the United States and its allies as a victory for freedom and democracy and the fall of a communist empire. In conclusion the Cold War was caused by U.S. fear of the spread of communism and other events.

Christianity for example has many different types of people like Catholics, Protestants among others. I find it interesting how there are similarities among different religions but most of the time they only see their differences in order to condemn each other and prove they are the only “right” one. Christianity caught my attention because as Stearns says how coverts brought religion, the Latin writing system, and different artistic and intellectual instruments associated with Roman Christianity. Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism are major religions around the world and millions of people practice them. An important factor for Christianity to be known around the world was the connection that Europe had with the Americas.
The author uses the definition, “Religious stratification occurs when religion is institutionalized in the laws and/or customs of society as a criterion for the allocation of social positions and their attendant rewards (Pyle 57).” If the advantages of religious affiliation are not intertwined in the laws of society, religious stratification may not last. However, this was not the issue during the emergence of the Colonies. I find this a very thought provoking concept. Through a historical aspect, we can determine some actions made by the colonist. From a political aspect, we may understand some political ideals of the time.
Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim on Religion Religion plays a very interesting role in the world of Sociology because it is such a deep seeded and integral thread that holds many different parts of society together. A religion can be seen as a unified system of beliefs and practices which are relative to sacred things and beliefs (Giddens 1972, p.224). It can shape ones thoughts and feelings and gives people a sense of hope and something to believe in. However, although virtually no sociologist will deny the importance of religion in different societies, they differ greatly on their views on how it can fit into social and/or economic theory. Emile Durkheim and Karl Marx are two very well known sociologists whose opinions on religion differ a great deal.
Why did he do it? Was it just because of his love for Anne Boleyn? We don’t exactly know but we do know that there were a lot of reasons behind it.
