How does Fitzgerald tell the story in Chapter six? Arguably one of the most important aspects of narrative during chapter six is ‘narrative viewpoint’, in addition to ‘time and sequence’. The novel ‘The Great Gatsby’ is written as though it is actually Nick who has crafted the novel, illuminating the reader with the dramatic happenings that occurred during the summer of 1922. As a partially involved character within the book, Nick forms his own personal opinions on the characters he interacts with and forms a strong friendship with his neighbour, Gatsby. It is due to Nick’s desire to convey a positive image of Jay Gatsby, the image which he himself withheld, that inclines him to vary from his use of chronological order during chapter six, suddenly adopting the use of anachrony by unexpectedly deviating from the main plot.
In Midnight in Paris, Gil undertakes an imaginative journey as a result of his nostalgia. The dissatisfaction of the present drives Gil to the 1920’s- an era of Modernism. Along the journey, he meets individuals that are critical in changing his perspective including the influential writers Fitzgerald and Hemingway, and Adriana, a person of the 1920s with Golden Age thinking of La Belle Époque. The linguistic features depicted by the artists through dialogue gives strong impressions of individualism and hold an epicentre of modernistic beliefs. The characters are essential in setting the backgrounds and morals to the time period so that the viewers are able to gain a better understanding to Gil’s desires and emotions.

Ford evokes the feelings of empathy in terms of tone and atmosphere in his article by using some words to make everyone realize his feeling to the tragedy. Ford creates tone and atmosphere by recalling how great and wonderful New Orleans really once was before the tragic calamity. He describes the city in the positive way, telling the stories about his family to create the atmosphere of happiness and joy. For example, he mentions about V-J Day and City Park where his family took photos together. He portrays that “They are all dressed up and happy” (739).
Tyler Krause C.J. Gordon Writing 39B 15 February 2012 Brando Skyhorse: A Touch of Magic "Brando Skyhorse writes with great compassion and wit (and a touch of magic) about the lives of people who are often treated as if they are invisible. The stories that make up this novel weave together to create a complex and vivid portrait of a Los Angeles we seldom see in literature or film. The Madonnas of Echo Park is a memorable literary debut." Dan Chaon, author of Await Your Reply.
I have zoomed through two short novels so far this quarter and I’ve enjoyed both very much. I have read Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway, and have now finished Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton. Stylistically, the differences in Hemingway’s simple, yet effective descriptions of the sea and events contrasted strongly with Wharton’s more sophisticated and more complex sentences. However, both styles of writing served the purpose of the authors to create captivating and moving stories. I do feel that Hemingway’s simple vocabulary and direct narration would make his writing more accessible to a greater number of people at all age levels, as opposed to Ethan Frome, which would likely appeal to those who could read through a more diverse, complex vocabulary and narrative style.
‘For Sidney Bechet’ resonates with Phillip Larkin’s deep love of Jazz music and is dedicated to the famous Jazz saxophonist and clarinettist, Sidney Bechet. Larkin’s passion for Jazz began in childhood and during the sixties Larkin served as the Jazz critic for The Daily Telegraph. The poem itself is meant to sound like Jazz music with its Jazz like rhythm and the progression of story. The first stanza describes the opening of the song and the effect that the music makes follows. The note played, made significant by the use of “that”, narrows, rises and “shakes like New Orleans reflected on the water”.
Ernest Hemingway is known for his short writing style. In this story, he lays out a brief description of a wartime relationship. Hemingway starts the story in “in media res”. It brings us, readers, in an open story where we are free to assume what happened before the story started. The story did not start off with a usual description of the settings and characters, rather it begins with a one hot evening in Padua and they carried him up on to the room and “him” as one of the main characters in the story.
The team skills I have learnt from playing sport have proved valuable in a passion of mine; playing guitar in a band. This often requires large amounts of patience, compromise and respect for others’ opinions, especially when overcoming musical differences when writing songs. I am also interested in the beat generation of the 1950s and the works of literature it inspired, and wrote my extended independent research essay on the subculture’s influence on the subsequent mainstream culture. I have always loved to travel and since reading Jack Kerouac’s ‘On the Road’ I have felt compelled to do so more often; this summer I spent a month travelling across Europe with a group of friends visiting nine cities in eight countries and I’m currently saving towards a trip across South America. I think that my scientific background, analytical ability and skill in problem solving make me an ideal candidate for studying psychology.
