A Moveable Feast – Ernest Hemingway A Moveable Feast is a memoir of the American author Ernest Hemingway, set specifically in the time period of 1921 to 1926. The piece chronicles the life of an artist who lived in Paris amidst the city’s thriving era of the arts. While it centers primarily on the life of Ernest Hemingway, the book provides the reader with an extensive view of his contemporaries and a glimpse into the streets of early-twentieth century Paris. The memoir cannot serve as the sole source of probing the literati nor the location, as the colored lens through which Hemingway ganders at these figures is purely subjective. It is indisputable, however, that A Moveable Feast is a comprehensive narrative that enables the reader to explore the personal and often intimate account of the author’s treasured period of life. The memoir consists of innumerable accounts of people that Hemingway stumbles upon. For the most part, the story is set in Paris, often in cafes and restaurants. As Hemingway guides the reader through his seemingly ordinary yet picturesque life, he never ceases to describe the developmental process of his literary works. As evinced by the author’s admiration of both the city and his peers, Paris was the fountain of inspiration that stimulated the generation of many of his renowned works, such as the novel The Sun Also Rises. Throughout the course of the entire piece, Hemingway intertwines his encounter with notable figures, romantic hours spent with his loving wife, Hadley, and his reflective time by himself. As stated in the opening, the book follows no “strict chronological order” (Hemingway, 5). Instead, the chapters are loosely tied together by the mention of figures who had been introduced in the preceding pages.
