Torvald Helmer, Nora’s husband rebuked Nora for spending too much money on Christmas gifts (823). Nora thought the consumption was adequate because Torvald had recently obtained a new position at the bank. The Helmers’ friend Dr. Rank came to visit him. At the same time, Kristine Linde, Nora’s school friend, came into the room (825). Nora revealed a great secret to Mrs. Linde that Nora illegally borrowed money for a trip. She lied to Torvald that the money had come from her father (830). In the meantime, Krogstad, a bank clerk, arrived and entered Torvald’s study. Nora reacted uneasily to Krogstad’s visit (832). After others departed, Nora and Krogstad had a word, which revealed that Krogstad was the source of Nora’s secret loan. Krogstad asked Nora to convince Torvald not to fire him, emphasizing that he had a contract that contained signature of Nora’s father which Nora forged (838). When Torvald returned, Nora asked him not to fire Krogstad, but it did not work out. Next day, on Christmas, Torvald finally sent Krogstad’s letter of dismissal. Shortly, Krogstad arrived and complained about his dismissal (854). He now insisted to Nora that he be rehired in a higher position. He then put a letter about Nora’s debt and crime in the Helmers’ letterbox. Nora asked Mrs. Linde to speak with Krogstad (857). Also, Nora tried to keep Torvald away from the letterbox. The next evening, during the costume party, Krogstad met Mrs. Linde. Krogstad said he would take his letter back. However, Mrs. Linde let the letter stay in the mailbox. She believed that having secrets between the couple would be harmful (862). After the party was over, Torvald found and read a letter from Krogstad. He was outraged.
