When he started on the TV show he confessed he was a mediocre dancer. Anh practiced and practiced. Anh made it eventually to the grand final even though he believed his dancing skills were limited. Anh came 2nd in series. Anh describes the public reaction of him appearing on the series “ a week after the series had finished, I was in the bank paying off my credit card, holding about eight hundred in my hand suddenly a hand grabbed me from behind. The arm spun me around it was an old lady “Tango with me Anh “she said I was so surprised and relieved I shuffled around with her as the bank staff chuckled. “I voted for you Anh” she explained. I realised how absurd and wonderful it was that total strangers had spent money on me to keep me in a dancing show and I will never know who you all are. But I will be forever grateful”. This situation helped Anh come to the realisation that he is accepted and loved within Australia. Early on in the happiest refugee Anh is very conscious about how others will perceive him. He believed he wouldn’t belong if he didn’t have enough money or dress a certain way. But as the novel continues he becomes very comfortable with himself as an individual and certain scenarios such as dancing with the stars reinforce his own beliefs that he belongs and is loved within Australia as the Vietnamese quirky comedian that Australia as a nation has grown to
