To Waken an Old Lady is a poem that was authored by William Carlos Williams. The poem essentially focuses on the aspect of old age. Therefore, the writer utilizes numerous bookish tools so as to construct the poem. In my experience of reading the poem I got attracted to the manner in which the author presented the poem the use of literary devices actually affected my experience. The use aspects of content, language and form were of greatest significance in the entire poem.
In Nothing Gold Can Stay the author uses many poetic devices. This poem is an example of an extended metaphor. The metaphor says,” Nature’s first green is gold “. The poem is an extended metaphor because the poem explains the metaphor. The author uses the poetic device of rhyme at the end of every line.
Compare the ways controlling characters are used in Les Grands Seigneurs and My Last Duchess Dorothy Molloy and Robert Browning, the poets of Les Grands Seigneurs and My Last Duchess respectively, both create a significant and controlling character in their poems; using similar techniques and themes to illustrate the power and dominance to portray a specific message. Firstly, both Malloy and Browning frequently embed the personal pronoun ‘my’ into their controlling characters narrative. For example, the controlling character in Les Grands Seigneurs quotes ‘men were my buttresses’ in the opening line, whilst similarly, in the opening line of My Last Duchess, ‘that’s my last duchess painted on the wall’. This use of ‘my’ enables both characters to develop a sense of possession over their loved ones to the readers immediately; thus allowing their retelling of love to their audiences to be easier. This sense of control is only further strengthened by another technique used by both poets, the regular inclusion of caesuras.
I am going to write about Alfred Tennyson, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Small Island written by Andrea Levy. Descriptive language is words used to describe elements of literature, and is a an important aspect of each of the texts I studied. It is used to shape meaning, create interpretations and to build up a vivid imagery in the readers head. To begin, Alfred Tennyson uses descriptive archaic language throughout majority of his poems. Specifically the "The Lotus-eaters and Choric song" utilises descriptive language to it's full potential to help reveal location and consequently reflect character.
She also effectively utilizes literary techniques such as rhythm, alliteration, and imaging that contribute to the overall theme. The speaker of this poem associates himself with a group that he refers to as we. The poem is written in first person, presenting only one character’s point of view. The title is ironic. "We Real Cool" is contradicting the last line, "We Die soon."
Write about the ways Browning tells the story in ‘Porphyria’s Lover’. Browning uses a multitude of techniques to tell the story in ‘Porphyria’s Lover’. These include language techniques like, similes, metaphors, nature imagery repetition and pathetic fallacy; the form of the poem, including the rhyme scheme and iambic tetrameter; and the structure of the poem, like the amount of stanzas or power struggle between Porphyria and her lover. Browning uses form to tell the story in ‘Porphyria’s Lover’. He does this by giving the poem an ABABB rhyme scheme.
One of these elements of poetry is very apparent while reading some of these poems and that is element is metaphor. Metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two things that don’t have anything in common in a way that gives it commonality. Many poems throughout the book uses metaphors to help compare complex issues by tying it to an object or something that is very familiar to most people so that the once complex issue can now be understood by most. A poem that stands out a lot through the use of a metaphor is Niggerlips written by Martin Espada. The poem itself is talking about racism and how throughout generations racism has been felt in some way or form.
I feel like this poem should be read behind a podium by the person who wrote it. I would also consider this poem a visual poem because I get certain flashes of the topics and people talked about in it from time to time. This is very deep poem if you have knowledge of the different subjects being asked about. I WILL NOT "APOLOGIZE", I WILL NOT "RESIGN!" The essay talks about the effect the poem had on certain people and
James Adagbon English 2/2B Mrs. Berry September, 11, 2013 Stephen Vincent Benet’s short story “By the Waters of Babylon” expresses the speaker’s attitude towards the place of the gods using many literary techniques. Two of the techniques that spoke to me were the mood and figurative language used in the story. Mood is one element in the narrative structure of a piece of literature. To put in simpler form mood is the atmosphere or predominant emotion in a literary work. Figurative language refers to words, and groups of words, that exaggerate or alter the usual meanings of the component words.
Compare the way the poets use structure and language to convey meaning in ‘What were they like?’ and one other poem. (27 marks) I am going to compare the way in which poets use structure and language to convey meaning in ‘What were they like?’ and ‘Island Man’. I have chosen Island Man as my second poem because I believe that like ‘What were they like’, it has an interesting structure that leaves a lot of room for comparison. Levertov using quite a unique way of structuring her poem by setting it out in a “question answer” structure – each question is paired with a like numbered answer. By using this technique the poet is conveying a childlike innocence within the poem that contrasts with the horrific language used in the ‘answers’.
