YWCA-KENYA CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF WOMEN EMPOWERMENT NAIROBI, 2OCTOBER 24, 2013: Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) yesterday celebrated 100 of years of empowering women, girls and communities in Kenya. YWCA was established in Kenya in 1912. It is the oldest women’s organization in the country. The YWCA Membership Day is celebrated annually every April. The theme for this year’s membership day is; “I am a woman, I have a right-we are women, we have the power.” The 100 years celebrations mark the contributions women in the family, at work, in the community and leadership. YWCA can now agree with the statement that says, “You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you educate a generation” (Brigham Young). YWCA celebrates girl child empowerment YWCA empowers women and girls through education, health, leadership and economic empowerment. The organization supports programmes that promote sustainability and fulfillment of basic needs amongst women and girls. YWCA encourages women and girls to participate in projects and programmes aimed at raising their educational, social, health and economic standards, to enable them to effectively play their rightful role in the effort of nation building. Kenyan women celerating YWCA at the Nyayo Sports View in yesterday YWCA – Kenya currently has branches in Mombasa, Kisumu, Meru, Kisii, Nairobi, Tana River and Siaya. YWCA connects over 25 million women and girls worldwide. It not only has the potential to influence and impact lives locally but also at a global level. 1st YWCA Site in New Bedford: YWCA Headquarters from 1911-1924. The building is now demolished. One hundred years of women have left an impact on the lives of women not just in New Bedford where it was started but in Kenya and worldwide.
