Thomas University CRJ490 Special Topics Gangs Spring 2012 COURSE SYLLABUS © All rights reserved by Thomas University Course Description: This course examines up-to-date information on the youth gang phenomena in the United States. By emphasizing the distinction between gangs and gang members, this course will highlights the differences between the individual and group perspective. These distinctions allow for a richer understanding of the gang problem. A wide range of contemporary gang topics are explored in this book including: definition, theory, gang organization, member experiences, gang crime, gender, race/ethnicity, prison gangs, and prevention and intervention. Material/Method of Instruction: This course will be taught as an online class. It is not a “correspondence course” in which students may work at his and/or her own pace. Each week there will be assignments, on-line discussions and/or exams with due dates. All assignments are posted under Assignments on Blackboard. It is essential that you check your e-mail weekly; some courses will require you to check it daily. To keep your mailbox clear, you should delete mail you no longer need, empty your Sent Items, your Deleted Items, and your Junk E-mail weekly.
