The number of live births per year increased due to several factors such as children were used to work on farms (source of income) and in those days there was no reliable contraception and little education. The number of people dying was also high but still less in proportion to the birth rates. This was due to poor medical knowledge and poor diet, water and sanitation. More recently the birth rate has decreased and this is due to social, economic, cultural, legal, political and technological factors. A mixture of these factors led to the change in the position of women in society, the increase in equality, especially legally, including the right to vote (legal factor), the increase in educational opportunities (social factor) meant that women chose to educate themselves before starting a family, the increase in work opportunities with laws banning unequal pay and sex discrimination (social/legal factor)and changing attitudes in society meant that it was socially acceptable for women to be employed whereas traditionally the wife would be the housewife and the husband would be the breadwinner and would financially support his family.
Being in a foraging society had some advantages and disadvantages and being in an urbanized society also had some advantages and disadvantages. In a foraging society they heavily relied on weather since they had to find there own food and that was a bad disadvantage. If there was good weather then they could go out and search for food but if there was bad weather then it would be extremely difficult to search for and get food and in the Paleolithic age, they needed all the food they could get in order to survive. In an urbanized society, they relied on weather too but they often would have surplus so they did not rely on it as much. In a foraging society, they had to hunt and gather their own food which was a big disadvantage because that means they had to constantly be moving around because one area could not keep a society alive for a whole lifetime.
The world population is growing faster than food can be produced. There are many countries that are starving because they can’t produce food. Some countries lack the money for research, education, or the land space. All across the world people are starving to death and this is the century that needs to fix it. There are countries like the U.S., Japan, and China that can educate other countries.
Today, our food and agriculture system is not sustainable, and can be greatly improved with the help of the whole community. However, some may think that sustainability is too expensive and time consuming and is not enough to help to our local health and economy. Some may choose to neglect local farms to save money, time and energy. Some people value using our land and resources for commercial use, tourism and urbanization instead of sustainable agriculture. Some believe the scarce and declining amount of farming land and natural resources is
The industrial also encouraged a huge migration within countries. Families were moving from the countryside to the city for better opportunities. The industrial revolution produced new social classes. Now people were not both rich and part of the aristocrats lifestyle or extremely poor. The classes were more spread out and
News was spread by travellers or through messengers and goods were distributed largely within the locality in which they were produced. People had to rely upon themselves and their communities to provide the vast majority of the things that they needed. Food was produced locally along with clothing which made use of animal hides and furs (cotton wasn't imported in large quantities until developments enabled larger stock of the material). Education was poor, only the rich being taught by nannies or private tutors. There were of course schools and several universities.
Being in the urban city, parents and children are constantly on the move. With both parents working, the children’s activities and friends, there is little time for “family time”. Family time is usually saved up for the special occasions like holidays and birthdays. Sometimes even those events do not guarantee that all members of the nuclear or extended family make an appearance. With the statement by Coleman, Ganong, Clark, and Madsen (1989) that with the urban population so mobile and has fewer close kin available, it is rarely a surprise when family is missing from an event.
In Emerson's time, the majority of American citizens lived in rural areas. However, the 1920 census was the first time in American history where more people lived in urban environments than in rural areas. [8] Being in this environment would make various social issues far more apparent to a young minister such as Rauschenbusch. Seeing poverty and the affects of poor living conditions on a daily basis influenced the urgency toward social reform. Another factor affecting this urgency toward social reform is post-millennialism.
As a country, we are spending over $190 billion a year treating these diseases, diseases that could be prevented by increasing exercise and decreasing calories. The scariest fact is that one in three children under 18 are overweight or obese, a rate that has tripled since 1960. The fact that the obesity rates are so high shows that as a society we accept this lifestyle. We need to be proactive as a country, and stop accepting this lifestyle and work towards a healthier society. If this continues we will have a new generation of people that don’t outlive their parents.
In her article “Food Stamps Should Be Expanded”, Linda Bopp states “More than 25 million Americans, including at least 13 million children, are not able to meet the most fundamental of human needs.” How can 25 million people go without food when America is one of the wealthiest and developed nations in the world? Over half of those Americans are children. We should be ashamed to allow our neighbors to suffer. Food stamps provide
