Zoey Crain Comp 1302 Prof. Dodge February 9, 2012 The Yellow Wallpaper The psychological thriller, The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a short story about a woman with postpartum depression. The narrator’s husband and brother concluded it was a nervous depression. Her husband and she move out to a rather suspicious house, so she can better herself. She isn’t aloud to do any kind of work and is given strict instructions to get air and relax her self.
Having to undergo the seven-year-itch, Ann is incapable of fighting against her disloyal thoughts, and her discontentment against John. Further in the short- story, Ross continues to portray Ann’s inner conflict indirectly by describing the tension in the atmosphere of the house. Ross writes: “The flames cracked, the clocked ticked. The storm wrenched the walls as if to make them buckle in. So rigid and desperate were all her muscles set, withstanding, that the room around her seemed to swim and reel.
Creon cares about his son so much he doesn’t want Haemon to marry Antigone just because she broke the law. Creon says, “You will never marry this side of death.”(646) Creon cares mostly about his family and don’t Haemon to marry a women that did something bad. Creon is doing the right thing for his son so he can live a better life than marrying a woman that broke the law. Creon also says, “No son of mine shall web so vile a creature.”(486) Haemon tries so hard to convince her father to let him marry her but Creon is stopping him. He cares about her wife, Eurydice, as well because Creon wanted to suicide when he saw his son and wife died in scene 8.
Holden’s fear of change contributes to his resistance of the process of maturity. This is because Holden considers becoming mature a substantial change in his life and he, therefore, resists it. When Holden hired a prostitute, he realised that having sex with a prostitute would contribute to his progress to adulthood. Therefore, he attempted to get out of it by diverting the topics of the conversations he had with the prostitute, even though he knew it was a ‘childish thing’. It is notable that Holden never directly mentioned that he disliked sex; He merely says that he was ‘feeling so damn peculiar.’ His thoughts about the museum of Natural History demonstrate his fear of change.
By tearing it down, the narrator emerges from the wallpaper and asserts her own identity, albeit a somewhat confused, insane one. Though she must crawl around the room, as the woman in the wallpaper crawls around, this "creeping" is the first stage in a feminist uprising. From the beginning of the story, the narrator’s creativity is set in conflict with John’s rationality. As a writer, the narrator thrives in her use of her imagination, and her creativity is an inherent part of her nature. John does not recognize his wife’s fundamental creativity and believes that he can force out her imaginative fancies and replace them with his own solid
He was never a man to take the blame but rather say that his actions were just reactions of unfortunate events that others caused. Even though he too, along with Daisy, was not loyal to his partner, he never once admitted he was wrong. He would proceed to lollygag with Myrtle and come home to accuse Daisy of her unloyal actions towards him. A man with that much fortitude cannot be happy with whom he is or he would not be accusing anyone of anything.”…and as we drove away Tom was feeling the hot whips of panic. His wife and his mistress, until an hour ago secure and inviolate were slipping precipitately from his control.”(p.119) Tom knows that Daisy only married him for his money and although she has developed feelings for him, he fears that if he leaves her for Myrtle she will turn to Gatsby.
However, this is justified by the society he lives in. Winston has no friends if he can help it, and avoids anyone who attempts to be friendly or talk with him, because of his constant caution of the thoughtpolice. He is also a physical wreck, and his health constantly gives him pain. However, his anti-social behaviour and his physical condition can both be thanks to the society and the party governing Oceania. Winston avoids any form of social interaction, making him unpopular amongst his “comrades.” He attempts to keep clear of anybody who talks to him.
Gilman uses symbols to explain the how women are trapped in domestic life. The symbol that Gilman uses the yellow wallpaper in the room she is confined in. At first, the wallpaper is just awful as she says “The color is repellent, almost revolting; a smoldering unclean yellow.” She is disgusted by it and understands why children, who have been in this room, would want to tear it down. Then, the wallpaper becomes a point of curiosity as she wants to discover the organization of the pattern. She said, “...and I determine for the thousandth time that I will follow that pointless pattern to some sort of a conclusion,” as if the wallpaper was made with symmetry in mind.
But she simply negates her instinct and tells her that “what [she] felt was a draught, and shut the window” (Gilman). John does not listen deeply to what his wife says, he hardly ever really listens to her at all. The narrator says, “I wish he would le me go and make a visit to Cousin Henry and Julia” (Gilman). But john says that she “wasn’t able to go, nor able to stand it after [she] got there” (Gilman). He us always making decisions for her based on his assumptions on what is best for her, and not what she really wants.
Analytical paper # 2 Due: October 24, 2012 “The Yellow Wallpaper” Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” is the story of a young woman whose creative appeal and self-expression are suppressed by her society and her marriage. The short story is told by the narrator through her diary, which she describes as an exemption of her thoughts. The narrator is apparently artistic and creative as can be seen through her animated descriptions of the house her husband John has rented. The narrator includes representations of the yellow wallpaper in the upstairs nursery where she and her husband sleep at night. The wallpaper is used characterically to reflect the marriage the narrator finds herself ambushed inside.
