Assignment 1: Chipping away at Intel Student: Vivian Samuel Professor: Dr Vanessa Graham Class: HRM 560 Date: January 28, 2013 Case Study @ Intel Discuss the changes at Intel over the first three years of CEO Craig Barrett’s tenure. The case study presented for this assignment describes the management decisions of Craig Barrett as being “bold moves that took Intel beyond chip making for PC’s [and] into the production of information and communication appliances as well as services related to the Internet” (Palmer & Dunford 2009 pg 72). Barrett had spent lots of money by investing in new business projects and markets that soon had to be withdrawn due to possible lack of knowledge. The first change conducted by Barrett was to “withdraw [the business] from the production of network servers and routers after copping backlash from its biggest customers Deli and Cisco” Second, he closed down Intel’s partner for e-commerce services iCat, which was an e-commerce service partner for small businesses providing Web broadcasting of share-holder meetings. Barrett seemed to believe that his so-called ‘hands on leadership disciplines were the best strategies for keeping Intel out in front of its growing list of competitors.
To combat this, the FBI developed a plan known as Trilogy, which aimed for three primary goals: A new computer network, personal computers for most agents, and an online criminal database that would be titled Virtual Case File (VCF). An external contractor by the name of Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) was contracted in June 2001 to begin the project with an estimated schedule of three years for completion and a first year budget of $14 million. The project continued until early 2005 (7 months over schedule), at which time the project scope had expanded by 80% with costs of $170 million and was riddled with issues. Ultimately, in early 2005, the project was cancelled but not after escalation and persistence on the part of the FBI. The Problems and Failure of VCF The FBI wanted SAIC to create the database from scratch instead of using off-the shelf Oracle programs that could have been customized.
Instead, Sony has changed gears and will now begin to concentrate on the production of smartphones and tablets. Because the market is not yet saturated with these technologies, there is a greater market available. Another focus will be on the gaming side because it has seen remarkable growth. These changes will help us to continue selling high quality products at competitively low prices. References Sony Info.
They started by selling BASICS the first PC computer language program to MITS Computer, Microsoft first customer. Still, it was not until 5 years later they started to dominate the computer operating system by producing DOS for IBM. Now Microsoft is a company that develops, licenses, and supports a variety of software products and services for different computer devices. They also produce a line of office software, and in 2001 they released Xbox entering the game console industry. It markets and distributes its products and services through original equipment manufacturers, distributors and resellers, as well as online.
In 2002, Best Buy acquired Geek Squad, a 24-hour computer-support taskforce, as a service feature for their corporation. In 2009, after Circuit City closed its doors, Best Buy was the largest electronics retail store, both online and bricks and mortar in the eastern United States. As a leader in electronics and the boom in consumer demand for mobile devices, Best Buy opened its first Best Buy Mobile location in 2009. As Best Buy struggled to emerge in foreign markets, it closed several stores in the UK and China and sought investment in established brands in those markets instead. With the rapid growth of the company and high competition, Best Buy is constantly striving to stay a leader in the consumer electronics market.
Case Analysis 3: Blockbuster Identification of the strategic issues and problems Beginning with minimal competition, Blockbuster is a company recognized in its industry as one of the first worldwide powerhouses in media and game rentals. As technology and competition continuously grows, Blockbuster increased their strategic focus to preserve their brand’s global power through strategic alliances. Their multiple channels in media entertainment keep them at a competitive advantage but the concern remains that their dependency on assets and relationships isn’t what will keep the company ahead in the future. Blockbuster’s reliance on this alone, as a strategy to continuously compete with evolving times, will be their biggest weakness. Opportunities are still available for Blockbuster to reevaluate and implements new strategies.
Persuasive essay Recently I have wanted to buy either a Sony PS3 or a Microsoft Xbox 360. I wanted the best bang for my buck, and good research is the foundation of a good deal. My research proved which game console is best, and I’m going to share what i learned in this essay you see today. The result of that research is the comparison of the price of the console, the percentage of consoles failures, the exclusive game for the console, and the price and quality of the manufacture services The Sony PS3, because of its built-in Blu-ray DVD player, which comes with free Wi-Fi, has outperformed its rival, the Microsoft Xbox 360, since day one. At the time when the Xbox 360 was first released Microsoft was charging $99 to customers who wanted wireless internet on their 360's.
Joshua Anderson Tivo Case Analysis October 19, 2011 Tivo, the ideal founded by Jim Barton and Michael Ramsay, to change how people ultimately viewed TV, puts control of what is watched on television in the consumer’s hand. Indeed, a good concept to start with and a chance to be the first to act on a new product and potential market, but after fourteen months in an industry with 102 million TV- watching households, Tivo as the case says, had only reached .04 percent of this TV- watching population. With access to distribution points and outsourced sales teams under major players in the electronic industry such as Sony and Phillips, Tivo still lacked the sales to show for such a creative product. The case points to a lack of awareness as one of the key factors that contributed to this underachievement, but many different inferences coupled with this concept have led to Tivo’s woes. The first inference we can draw from the case is that there was a disconnect between consumers and the product category that Tivo was ultimately going to fill.
The co-location of Flextronics at an industrial park minimized shipping costs and improved information flow between Flextronics and its vendors. Shortly after Microsoft launched its original Xbox in 2001, in 2002 the company had to reduce its Xbox price from $299 to $199 to match Sony’s price of the PS2 console. Therefore, Flextronics moved the production from Hungary to China, where labor costs were low in this country. For the Xbox 360, Microsoft would use three EMS suppliers to produce the Xbox consoles in China to minimize the labor costs and to take advantage of the location of these firms proximity to one another. • Microsoft used an in-house designed for the original Xbox which the Japanese users had criticized the original Xbox for its unattractive appearance and large controller size.
