WS6 A4 Otey McCloy The concepts raised in this week’s reading assignment provide a nice summary for the conclusion of this communication course. In the article “The Law of Victory: Leaders Communicate Until They See Results” (Maxwell, 2007) which accompanied the passage in Isaiah, Maxwell pointed out that God’s communication is used to carry out a purpose. He communicates to accomplish His goals. So, we are reminded that our communication should also serve a purpose, not just talk to talk. If we are not intending a purpose for our words, either spoken or written, they will bear no fruit – they are useless. We are also reminded that sometimes our communication has consequences, even when we think there will be none. Therefore, let us take heed before we speak. This is not meant to deter us from speaking or writing as often, but to make sure they have an intended purpose. When asked to speak, have something meaningful to say. The author, Kendra Carmicheal, tells of how in a particular business communications course in undergraduate study, students were required to participate in a virtual team exercise. This exercise was meant to help student understand the complexity of working on a wholly virtual team, particularly in the area of communication and teamwork. The students were asked to log on to a social media platform called “Second Life” and perform game board functions while interacting with their virtual team members to solve problems. As in most situations involving technology and people of various experience levels, the exercise brought mixed reviews.
